The Alabama Crimson Tide look to build on last season’s strong defensive performance after ranking in the top 25 in points allowed, total yards, and passing defense in 2024. However, it will be even more challenging after losing five defensive starters to the 2025 NFL Draft or the transfer portal. As a result, the Crimson Tide must count on their returning veterans to lead the team, including their ALL-SEC linebacker.

Deontae Lawson had a strong redshirt junior campaign, posting career highs in tackles, TFLs, interceptions, and pass deflections, and earning a Third-Team All-SEC selection. He recorded 76 tackles, seven TFLs, two sacks, one interception, four pass deflections, and one forced fumble in 11 games. Unfortunately, Lawson suffered an ACL tear during the second quarter against Oklahoma, resulting in him missing the final two games and his return for his final year of college eligibility.
He missed spring workouts, and many wondered whether he would be ready for fall camp, which begins shortly.

During SEC Media Days, Deontae Lawson provided a positive injury update, via Spenser Davis of Saturday Down South. The standout linebacker shared that he is ahead of schedule but expects to be limited for camp. However, Lawson believes he will be ready for the start of the regular season, an exciting development for the Crimson Tide’s defense.
“I’ve been ahead of schedule and I know I will be limited in camp, but I’ll be ready for the season,” Lawson said, via Davis.

Deontae Lawson is currently the second-best off-ball linebacker behind Anthony Hill Jr. and the 21st-best prospect overall in PFF’s2026 NFL Draft Big Board. With a strong redshirt senior season, he could solidify himself as a first or second-round pick. However, Lawson needs to improve his tackling and in man coverage against speedy receivers.
