Cunha injury update as Amorim hopes United forward will avoid 'long-term issues'

Matheus Cunha was spotted smiling and walking without aid aid outside of Old Trafford, alleviating concerns about the possibility of a long-term injury after he was forced off against Burnley on Saturday afternoon, the latest report has claimed.

The Red Devils won their first game of the Premier League season against Burnley, emerging as 3-2 victors at Old Trafford thanks to Bruno Fernandes's 97th-minute penalty.

Boss Ruben Amorim will have been relieved that his side rescued all three points, especially as he has been under pressure following a dismal start to 2025-26.

New signing Bryan Mbeumo opened his Premier League account for the club in the win, but fellow newcomer Cunha could not continue and was forced off in the 31st minute with what appeared to be a hamstring injury.

The Manchester Evening News claim that the forward was spotted smiling at fans as he left Old Trafford, and the Brazilian seemed unbothered as he exited the ground.

Ruben Amorim's injury dilemma: Team selection if Cunha injury concerns are confirmed

Cunha was not the only played substituted due to injury, with teammate Mason Mount also taken off, and Amorim confirmed in the aftermath of the match that he had in fact played on for 30 minutes despite his issue.

If their injuries are not serious, then they could be back for United's next game considering the club are not due to play until September 14 against Manchester City due to the imminent international break.

The Red Devils should still be able to deal with their absences against City given Fernandes could be pushed into a number 10 position from deeper midfield, and doing so would see the captain return to his favoured position.

Benjamin Sesko is yet to start a game for Manchester United, but the striker will be hoping that he is able to claim a place in the XI after the international break once he is fully fit.

Is Ruben Amorim making the most of Cunha, Benjamin Sesko and Bryan Mbeumo?

Amorim has so far utilised both Mount and Cunha up front in place of Sesko, with the duo both operating as false nines in the Premier League.

The club have netted four times this term in the top flight, but one goal was from the penalty spot, while another two were own goals.

After spending nearly £200m on three new forwards, there are concerns that the United boss is not making the most of the frontline that he has been given.

If Amorim fails to get the best out of Cunha, Mbeumo and Sesko, then there is a real chance that he could find himself on the brink of being replaced in the dugout.
