'Close and hard game' expected as Cherries host Exeter in National League

It will be the first time the two sides have met since the final day of the 2023/24 season, where the Grecians pipped the Cherries to the league title, both teams having recorded unbeaten seasons.

But, after Exeter performed well in the National League Southern Premier Division last season, and the Cherries earned promotion from Division One South West, the sides meet again at the Ringwood Community Hub.

Bournemouth sit atop the table after two games, winning both with a goal difference of eight across the two matches.

Exeter are seventh with one win from their two games, beating Cheltenham Town and falling to a 2-1 defeat to Lewes.

One player to have appeared for both sides is Jenna Markham, who joined the Cherries after helping Exeter to the title two seasons ago.

The striker has made a good start this season, scoring three goals in three games, and told afcb.co.uk looking ahead to the visit of the Grecians: “It’s definitely going to be weird. A lot of my best friends are still there and I still see them quite often.

“But I am looking forward to it. When I played for Exeter and we played against AFC Bournemouth, it was always a close game.

“Exeter beat us in pre-season last season but now our squad has got a lot stronger and the players are gelling well. It’s going to be a close game and a hard game. They will definitely be up for it.

“I am really looking forward to it. They will know exactly what I do, but I have just got to stick at what I do best. I also know all of their strengths and weaknesses and I am excited.”

The Cherries host Exeter City at the Ringwood Community Hub on Sunday, August 31, kick off at 2pm.
