Newcastle United have been handed a huge Fermin Lopez transfer update with Chelsea making a formal approach to Barcelona, it has been claimed. The Magpies are one of several Premier League clubs being linked to the 22-year-old alongside two London clubs.

Despite Hansi Flick confirming that he wants to keep Lopez at the Camp Nou, interest from Tottenham, Newcastle and Chelsea is still present.

"I don't want to lose any players now, because it will be a tough season," he said recently. "This quality from Fermin, he is doing really good, from last season - also when we start here, in the new season. I am happy with him and the players, and I want to keep everyone here, because we are happy with the options we have."

However, Chelsea look as though they will still attempt to sign him in the final days of the transfer window with a formal approach now made.

"EXCLUSIVE: Chelsea send an official written proposal to Barcelona for Fermín López!" Journalist Fabrizio Romano wrote on X. "Initial proposal worth €40m has been submitted this afternoon, right after the game. #CFC awaiting answer from Barça after sending a proposal."

That offer is well under half of what Newcastle are said to be willing to pay with El Chiringuito TV having claimed the Magpies would be willing to pay Barcelona in the region of £87million.

If a proposal of that size did arrive, it is very likely that Barcelona would change their exit stance and allow Lopez to move on. However, it now seems impossible - with Nick Woltemade signed in a £69million deal - while another striker is also being pursued as Alexander Isak looks set to join Liverpool.

Yoane Wissa and Jorgen Strand Larsen are the two centre-forwards Newcastle have bid for with both men not featuring for Brentford and Wolves, respectively, on Saturday afternoon. The latter was deemed unfit to feature due to injury, but was up in the stands at Molineux to see his side beaten by Everton.

Wissa, meanwhile, has been excluded from all three of Brentford's Premier League games so far this season but head coach Keith Andrews remains of the belief he will still be at the club by the end of the transfer window.
