Newcastle United have just under 48 hours to finalise their summer transfer business.

But the Magpies’ head coach was unable to confirm if that would be dependent on what happens with Alexander Isak.

In the hours leading up to Saturday’s goalless draw at Leeds United, United confirmed the £69million club-record signing of German striker Nick Woltemade from Bundesliga outfit Stuttgart.

Eddie Howe provides Newcastle United transfer & Alexander Isak update

It has been suggested that signing another striker before the window closes would allow Isak to join Premier League champions Liverpool.

When asked if that were true, Howe said: “On Alex's situation, I've got no communication, no update for you. We are still looking to actively recruit, but I don't know if that has any relation at all to Alex's situation.”

Howe then refused to be drawn on what position he would like to see strengthened.

“Yeah, I don't know what that player looks like, you're not going to get a position out of me,” Howe said. “But I'd love to add one more, just to give us the strength and depth that I think we need.”

Prior to agreeing a fee for Woltemade, Newcastle had a £40m bid rejected by Brentford for Yoane Wissa and offers of £50m and £55m turned down by Wolverhampton Wanderers for Jorgen Strand Larsen.

The Magpies are understood retain an interest in the pair but will only sign one. Both players have told their respective clubs they want to move to St James’ Park, but that has been met with resistance.

Eddie Howe looks ahead to the final 48 hours of the transfer window

Looking ahead to the remaining 48 hours of the summer transfer window, Howe said: “I will be on my phone probably 24/7.

“The reality is when you're in my position, you're not actually communicating with clubs, players, you're just finding out what's going on. So, you're sort of a secondary person in it, you're not doing it yourself. So, I rely on other people and situations to try and get more for the squad.

“I'd love to do one more player, just to get the full strength that I think we need.”

Newcastle United stance on Alexander Isak

As reported by NewcastleWorld, while Isak remains on the periphery at the club - and Liverpool continue to wait in the wings for a potential deal in the final days of the transfer window - Newcastle remain ‘happy’ with the idea of reintegration and ‘comfortable’ that can be achieved following the closure of the summer transfer window.

Woltemade is, at this stage, very much a striker brought in to boost the current ranks, after the exit of Callum Wilson, although Howe is loath to label the German international as a direct replacement. A

And, should Newcastle be unable to add another striker between now and Monday, the door remains wide open for Isak to stay - this is despite claims in the media in the last 24 hours that a move to Anfield was agreed.
