Man Utd will be working right up until the transfer window closes but who do they need to sell and what do the need to buy?

Despite the transfer being open for months and Manchester United trying to make a fast start and get most of their work done early, they have been left scrambling in the closing days to repair a bruised and battered squad.

Who could still leave Man Utd?

Given the constraints of time, it looks like others such as Rasmus Hojlund might be staying put and Kobbie Mainoo won’t get his wish of a loan move away from Old Trafford either. A buyer for Andre Onana would represent a decent summer in terms of moving on those who the manager has been deemed surplus to requirements given the respective salaries and how much the Red Devils paid for certain players. A situation that sees Jadon Sancho no nearer to leaving despite several clubs agreeing a transfer fee and looking to take him. Without taking a pay cut, there is little chance of the former England winger being anywhere other than Old Trafford when the window shuts.

Senne Lammens will challenge for the no.1 jersey, the Royal Antwerp stopper might not be on the same level as Gianluigi Donnarumma but he isn’t Onana and at the moment, that seems to be the priority position being sorted even if the Nigeria keeper can’t find a new club. Every successful United team has had a good, in fact, world class goalkeeper as the last line of defence and nothing will change until a stronger, more consistent presence is found for between the sticks.

What position should Man Utd look to target before window shuts?

What has been surprising since Amorim took charge, is that he doesn’t have many senior centre-halves at his disposal considering that he plays a system that involves using three of them at the same time. Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez have both had injury issues and Leny Yoro has also spent time on the sidelines. With Harry Maguire out of contract at the end of the campaign, it seems bizarre not to have addressed the middle of defence. Until Martinez is fit, Amorim will be relying on the same trio of Maguire, De Ligt and Yoro for every game making it almost a blessing that there isn’t any European football.

The forward line has been strengthened with the addition of Benjamin Sesko and it might be the best thing to happen to Hojlund if he doesn’t leave United. Unless Jason Wilcox has something up his sleeve, it now looks unlikely that he will depart despite interest for most of the season. One area where Amorim definitely doesn’t need additions is at no.10 with more depth there than any other position. What is a question, is whether or not wingers will be signed if Sanco joins Antony and Garnacho out the door. He might not play with wingers as such, but not having any of a decent standard other than Amad Diallo would be naive, especially if the current manager doesn’t last much longer.
