Leeds United head coach Daniel Farke declared himself 'pretty happy' with his side's goalless draw with Newcastle United on Saturday night - and hinted they could have done even better with injured duo Ethan Ampadu and Ao Tanaka.

While Newcastle boss Eddie Howe had to cope without Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon and Joelinton, and saw Jacob Ramsey and Sven Botman forced off with injuries, Leeds went into the match without their first-choice midfield pair.

However, former Newcastle star Sean Longstaff and Ilia Gruev stepped up to the task in a game of few chances at Elland Road.

Newcastle were left frustrated with another goalless away draw, with Jacob Murphy's long range effort the only real shot on target for the visitors.

It means they have picked up two points from their opening three Premier League games, after a goalless draw at Aston VIlla and a tough 3-2 home defeat to Liverpool.

Leeds recovered from the effects of their 5-0 humbling to Arsenal, and looked a more solid side at home, where they had beaten Everton on the opening weekend.

In fact they could have won it late on, but Nick Pope saved Dominic Calvert-Lewin's effort with his feet in the dying stages.

"I'm pleased, not just with this game but in general this start to the season," Farke said

"At home we've got four points with two clean sheets and this was against one of the best sides in the UK.

"There was not much between the two teams and in the end, it was a well-deserved point for both sides.

"I don't want to be too greedy. One point against such a good Newcastle side and without Ethan Ampadu and Ao Tanaka and be this competitive, makes me pretty happy."

Newcastle return to Premier League action after the international break when they host Wolverhampton Wanderers at St James' Park.

They then face Barcelona on Tyneside in the first of their Champions League matches, before at trip to take on Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium.
