Manchester United manager Rúben Amorim admitted he is worried about injuries to Matheus Cunha and Mason Mount, who were both forced off during the 3-2 victory over Burnley at Old Trafford.
Cunha signalled immediately to the bench after pulling up clutching his hamstring midway through the first half, moments after United had taken the lead via a Josh Cullen own goal. The Brazilian forward was replaced by Joshua Zirkzee and went straight down the tunnel, raising fears of a potential lay-off.
Mount, meanwhile, was substituted at half-time with Amorim later confirming he had played the final half-hour of the opening period carrying a knock.
Amorim: “We Need Those Guys Really Bad”
Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Amorim didn’t hide his concern:
“*It was hard to lose Cunha and Mason Mount, because Mason Mount played 30 minutes with an injury. I’m concerned about that, because they are so important for us. We will see.*”
In his press conference, the United boss added:
“*I don’t know [how they are], I don’t know. We will check them. We need those guys really bad to be really competitive.*”
Mount’s Impact Before The Injury
The setback was especially frustrating for Mount, who had been one of United’s standout performers in the first half. His performance was captured by Statman Dave on X, who highlighted his dominant numbers before the break:
100% aerial duels won
100% long pass accuracy
100% successful take-ons
81% pass accuracy
60% ground duels won
5 passes into the final third
4 ball recoveries
1 effort against the woodwork
Mount also won a penalty that was overturned by VAR, underlining his influence in a game where he looked sharp and decisive before being forced off.
Chaotic Second Half
Despite losing two key players, United battled through a frenetic second half. Lyle Foster equalised for Burnley, before Bryan Mbeumo restored United’s advantage just 13 seconds later.
Burnley struck back again through Jaidon Antony, capitalising on a defensive lapse, but in stoppage time Antony fouled Amad Diallo inside the box. VAR intervened and Bruno Fernandes stepped up to bury the decisive penalty in the sixth minute of added time, sealing United’s first league victory of the campaign.
Looking Ahead
The win brings relief to United after a stuttering start, but the spotlight now turns to Cunha and Mount’s fitness. With both players seen as central to Amorim’s system, any absence could prove costly in the weeks ahead.
For now, the manager’s words echo the feeling around Old Trafford: United may have found a much-needed result, but injuries to two key attacking figures cast a shadow over the victory.
