Last-gasp Bruno penalty denies battling Clarets

Martin Dubravka dives in vain as Bruno Fernandes scores from the penalty spot

In an end-to-end encounter in the pouring Manchester rain on Saturday, a stoppage-time penalty for United saw Burnley come away with nothing from Old Trafford, despite a battling second-half display which saw the visitors come from behind twice to equalise.

The hosts went into the break with a deserved 1-0 lead through an unfortunate Josh Cullen own goal, before the Clarets drew the scores level in the 55th minute through Lyle Foster’s finish.

However, the Reds did retake the lead just moments later through Bryan Mbeumo’s strike, but Burnley responded once again shortly after when Jaidon Anthony turned home his second Premier League goal of the campaign.

Five added minutes were shown on the board and it was in the dying stages that United were awarded a penalty for Anthony’s alleged foul on Amad Diallo, with Bruno Fernandes stepping up and slotting home the winner.

United started brightly and forced a couple of early corners, with Matheus Cunha seeing his close-range effort denied by Martin Dúbravka.

After weathering the early waves of pressure from the hosts, the Clarets did settle into it, before Mbeumo came close with two great opportunities, but the summer signing saw one saved by Dúbravka and then struck one wide.

Ruben Amorim’s side were still applying the pressure with just over 15 minutes played and it looked like a penalty was going to be given when Mason Mount collided with Kyle Walker on the edge of the area, before VAR intervened to rule it out for no foul.

However, United’s bright start did then pay off midway through the first-half, when a free-kick into the area was met by Casemiro, who found the back of the net via a Cullen deflection to put the hosts in front.

In what was a dominant first 45 minutes for the hosts, a chance then fell to Mount, but he could only guide his header onto the bar.

The Clarets started the second-half on the front foot and were enjoying plenty of the ball, before then levelling with 10 minutes gone.

Bruun Larsen picked the ball up out wide, before beating his man and curling a lovely low cross into the box for Foster, who turned it home past Altay Bayindir with a first-time effort for his first goal of the season.

However, that lead lasted just a minute, as from the kick-off Diogo Dalot broke into the area down the left and picked out Mbeumo inside the area to fire in from close range and restore United’s lead.

Burnley looked to have equalised just moments later when Foster raced through on goal and rounded Bayindir, before slotting home, but a narrow offside decision saw it ruled out.

Scott Parker’s side did have their equaliser shortly after. Following a goalmouth scramble, substitute Loum Tchaouna fired the ball at Bayindir, only for the goalkeeper to parry into the path of Anthony, who reacted quickest to rifle home and draw the scores level once again.

Then just as it looked like Parker’s men were going to see out the flurry of late United chances, a penalty was awarded via VAR after Anthony came together with Amad.

With virtually the last moment of the game, Fernandes stepped-up from the penalty spot and slammed the ball home into the bottom corner to seal United’s first win of the season.
