"We still stand behind him"- Man United ace addresses Amorim's future amid exit talk

Manchester United centre-back Matthijs de Ligt has insisted that the dressing room are fully behind head coach Ruben Amorim amid the speculation surrounding the Portuguese's future.

The Red Devils suffered a shock exit to Grimsby Town in the second round of the EFL Cup last week, and Amorim hinted after the match that he could walk away from his job at Old Trafford.

Man United were on the verge of dropping points against Burnley in the Premier League on Saturday, only for Bruno Fernandes to come up with a last-gasp winner from the penalty spot.

Amorim admitted that he is "really emotional" when questioned after the Burnley match, and his future in charge of the 20-time English champions still remains the subject of much speculation.

However, De Ligt has insisted that the dressing room at the club are fully behind the Man United boss.

De Ligt backs Man United boss Amorim amid exit talk

"As a player you are responsible for the results. They always speak about the manager, obviously, but I think as players we also looked at each other in the eye after Grimsby and said to each other, "guys, the performance of this week is not acceptable". It will be really, I think, bad to say that it's the manager's fault," the Daily Mail quotes De Ligt as saying.

"It's mostly us, and we know that. Obviously we still stand behind him, and he stands behind us, so we keep going like that. I think this result makes that feeling even more."

In a separate interview with MUTV after the match, De Ligt said: “I think the first half was good from our side - we created a lot of big chances, I think we didn’t concede that much.

“Overall a really stable and solid performance but obviously you keep them in the game with not scoring the 2-0 or even 3-0 - that’s something we could improve.

“But also in the second half, you felt like we dropped in energy and retention and then you see out of nowhere they could score goals and make it difficult for us.

“That’s something we definitely have to improve, but I think the fact we came after the first goal of theirs - immediately we scored 2-1 and after 2-2 we still believed to score 3-2 - I think is the biggest plus of today, but we all know that getting away [with it] like today is not every week so we really have to improve on that.”

When are Man United next in action?

Man United will now have a number of players away on international duty, with national team fixtures halting the 2025-26 season despite the fact that it has only just started.

The Red Devils will return to action against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium in the Premier League on September 14, before finishing the month with games against Chelsea (September 20) and Brentford (September 27).
