Just in: Fabrizio Romano says Man Utd agree personal terms to sign 'world-class' star

Manchester United have agreed personal terms with Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez after making an approach to the Midlands club, according to GIVEMESPORT senior correspondent Fabrizio Romano.

The goalkeeper position has been a bit of a problem for Ruben Amorim since his arrival. Altay Bayindir and Andre Onana are the two main options between the sticks, but they have struggled to produce consistent form. United also have Tom Heaton as a third-choice backup, but he's in the squad mainly to provide emergency cover and experience.

United's main focus in the summer market has to bolster their options in the final third. After a disappointing 2024/2025 season in front of goal, United added Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha, and Bryan Mbeumo to their attack, although we're yet to see them reach the heights expected of them in the opening few games of the new campaign.

Emiliano Martinez after being sent off for Aston Villa against Manchester United

Reporting on X, Romano has confirmed that United have now agreed personal terms with Martinez after the Red Devils made an approach to Aston Villa for the goalkeeper. The Argentina international is a 'concrete' option for United if they are unable to complete a deal for Senne Lammens.

"Manchester United have agreed personal terms with Emiliano Martínez and approached Aston Villa! As exclusively revealed this morning, Dibu is back as concrete option for #MUFC if Lammens deal doesn’t happen. Talks well underway now."

The former Arsenal shot-stopper, dubbed "world-class" by Sky Sports pundit Dan Bardell, would likely come in and instantly become United's number one goalkeeper, with Andre Onana struggling to perform since joining the club. Whether Villa would sanction a sale so close to the end of the transfer window remains to be seen, but they are already working on replacements, which is a positive sign.

Romano has also confirmed that Villa have made contact to sign Lammens, who United are also in for, while Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa is also an option. It appears that both Villa and United could have a new number one by the end of the window, with dominos now starting to fall into place.

There's going to be a bit of shuffling around in terms of goalkepers, with Villa and United both massively involved in the market for a new number one.
