Manchester United are in a race against time to secure a new goalkeeper before tomorrow's transfer deadline, with Aston Villa's Emi Martinez emerging as a prime target. The Red Devils' manager, Ruben Amorim, is keen on an upgrade from Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir, with Martinez and Royal Antwerp's Senne Lammens being the top contenders for the No.1 jersey.
It's believed that World Cup winner Martinez is the preferred choice due to his extensive Premier League experience, hence United's strong pursuit. Unverified reports suggest that Martinez has been dropped from Villa's squad for tonight's Premier League match against Crystal Palace, fuelling speculation about his imminent departure.
Villa are reportedly demanding around £40million for Martinez, while 23-year-old Lammens would cost United approximately £20m, a significant factor considering the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
With Martinez turning 33 next week, selling him to United could aid Villa in their PSR compliance, provided the offer matches their valuation. And that means they are open to a deal.
Onana, who was bought from Inter Milan for £43m in 2023, was at fault during United's surprising Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby, while Bayindir has also underperformed against Arsenal, Fulham and Burnley.
Ex-United defender Victor Lindelof, whose contract expired last season, is rumoured to be on the brink of signing for Villa.
