Man United agree Emiliano Martinez personal terms, but £17m hijack threat means Ineos face key choice

Manchester United will need to find a solution to their goalkeeping dilemma in the next 24 hours.

The transfer deadline is right around the corner and Manchester United are pushing hard to bring in a new goalkeeper as the fifth major signing of the summer.

It seems Ineos have narrowed their options down to two – Emiliano Martinez or Senne Lammens.

United made an improved Lammens offer after several weeks of talks with Royal Antwerp, and previous reports suggest the 23-year-old goalkeeper is Ineos’ top target.

But United have revived interest in Martinez after having a loan offer rejected by Aston Villa earlier in the summer.

Emiliano Martinez leaves the pitch after being shown a red card for a foul on Rasmus Hojlund during the Premier League match between Manchester United and Aston Villa at Old Trafford in 2025 in Manchester.

Emiliano Martinez terms agreed by Man United

Despite Ruben Amorim publicly defending his goalkeepers, United’s transfer activity suggests a new No.1 is wanted at Old Trafford.

Villa previously demanded £40m for Martinez, but with the window about to close, United could strike a bargain deal.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, United have agreed personal terms with Martinez and have now approached Villa to explore a potential deal.

Romano adds that Martinez is considered as a “concrete option” at United, but only “if the Lammens deal doesn’t happen”.

United will continue to try and get the Lammens deal over the line, but Martinez’s club Aston Villa are now complicating things further.

Aston Villa ready to hijack Senne Lammens deal

United have been stepping up their interest in Lammens, with Antwerp even leaving the goalkeeper out of their recent league matches to protect him from injury.

But United have already been warned that Galatasaray could hijack the Lammens deal, and now Villa have thrown their name into the hat too.

Romano reports that Villa have made a formal approach to Antwerp for Lammens, who is now considered one of their top options if Martinez leaves.

Therefore, Ineos now face a choice: Push for Martinez and miss out on Lammens, or try to win the race for the Antwerp star.

Lammens is the cheaper of the two options with a valuation of around £17 million, and he has an exciting ceiling. But Martinez represents the more experienced and senior of the two options.
