Summer transfer window closes early as Premier League clubs adjust to new rules

The 2025 summer transfer window will close earlier than usual this year with Premier League and EFL clubs unable to sign players after 7pm BST on Monday, September 1.

Alexander Isak continues to be linked with a summer move away from Newcastle United.

Alexander Isak continues to be linked with a summer move away from Newcastle United.

The 2025 summer transfer window is set to close earlier than usual this year. Premier League and EFL clubs will have until 7pm BST on Monday, 1 September to sign new players.

As per tradition, clubs will be granted a two-hour grace period after the window shuts to finalise deals, but only if the paperwork is submitted to the FA by 7pm. The transfer windows in La Liga, Bundesliga, Ligue 1 and Serie A will all close simultaneously.

In the past, the transfer window in England has closed at 11pm BST, but this has been brought forward following an agreement between the FA, Premier League and EFL.

This change aims to provide a more regular working pattern for staff involved in transfers, rather than the late nights and unsociable hours that have become associated with deadline day.

However, Scotland's window will remain open until 11pm, while FIFA's international transfer deadline remains unchanged, closing at midnight. Saudi Arabia's window will stay open until Wednesday, 8 October.

Florian Wirtz signs for Liverpool

Liverpool signed Florian Wirtz earlier this summer for a British-record fee

This follows the division of the summer transfer window into two parts this year, with the first phase having run from 1-10 June. The window was moved forward to allow teams participating in the Club World Cup the chance to sign players before the tournament kicked off on 15 June.

Due to FIFA's rules, which state that a transfer window cannot last longer than 16 weeks in a calendar year, the window was split this summer, reopening for a second time on Monday, 16 June.

It's already been an incredibly busy summer for Premier League clubs. The signing of Eberechi Eze by Arsenal last week pushed this summer's spending to a jaw-dropping £2.6 billion - setting a new record for outlay in a single transfer window with a week still left.

Last year's expenditure stopped at £2.1 billion, while the previous record was set in 2023/24 with £2.5 billion. This summer's high spending is due to several big-name signings and a £1.4 billion spend on forwards - roughly £850 million more than the amount spent on defenders.

Most notably, Liverpool smashed the British transfer record by securing Florian Wirtz in a £116m deal from Bayer Leverkusen.

The purchases of Hugo Ekitike, Benjamin Sesko, Joao Pedro and Viktor Gyokeres have all contributed to the record-breaking figure.

And with the Alexander Isak saga still unfolding, the total could climb even higher before Monday's transfer deadline.

The future of the Newcastle United striker remains up in the air as he reportedly seeks a move to Liverpool, with the Swede's potential transfer expected to break the transfer record once again.

Slot is also awaiting a response from Crystal Palace after Liverpool offered £35m for Marc Guehi. The bid is a flat fee with no add-ons, and the English defender is reportedly keen on the move.

Isak and Guehi are Liverpool's two key transfer targets before the window closes, whilst Kostas Tsimikas looks set to join AS Roma on a season-long loan.

With the Greek International leaving the club, any reports of Andy Robertson also heading for the door are likely to diminish, especially with the Scotsman having recently been made vice-captain.
