Hugo Ekitike had a goal disallowed for Liverpool against Arsenal on Sunday

Former Premier League referee Mike Dean has insisted the decision to rule out Hugo Ekitike's goal against Arsenal on Sunday was the correct one.

The Liverpool striker thought he had continued his fine start to life in the Premier League when he converted from close range in the second-half after a goal-mouth scramble.

Florian Wirtz's shot was initially saved by David Raya before Cody Gakpo rushed onto the loose ball. The forward got to the ball before it fell to Ekitike on the goal line but the linesman immediately put his flag up.

Replays showed that Gakpo was in an offside position when Wirtz shot whereas Ekitike was onside. However, Gakpo's involvement in the build-up to the goal meant the offside call stood.

Speaking on Sky Sports' coverage of the game, Dean backed the officiating by the assistant referee. He said: "Good call by the assistant referee Dan Cook, to be fair," the former Premier League referee said. "

"The shot's come in, kept his concentration, it comes off the 'keeper and he's clearly offside, Gakpo, for me. You can see he's a good half-a yard to a yard offside. It is a fairly straightforward decision for the assistant referee.

"So good concentration and the correct on-field decision."

Fortunately for Liverpool, they managed to grab a winner through Dominik Szoboszlai's sensational free-kick meaning Arne Slot's men have won all three of their opening games of the 2025/26 season.
