One player released by Manchester United at the end of last season is on the brink of a Premier League return

It could be a busy final 24 hours of the transfer window for Manchester United as Ruben Amorim looks to bolster his side and sell unwanted players before the 7pm deadline.

United have endured a tough start to the season and a 97th minute penalty from Bruno Fernandes on Saturday helped the Red Devils clinch their first win of the campaign and ease a little bit of the pressure on Amorim’s shoulders.

The Old Trafford outfit have signed Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko this summer along with young left-back Diego Leon. They are looking at a late move for Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez and still want to sign a new defensive midfielder.

If a new midfielder is not secured, Casemiro will be the first choice for the position this season.

Victor Lindelof on verge of Aston Villa move

United’s move for a new midfielder comes after they decided to release Christian Eriksen at the end of last season. Another player let go by the Red Devils was Victor Lindelof - and in a surprise update, Fabrizio Romano reports he is on the verge of a move to Premier League rivals Aston Villa.

Serie A side Fiorentina and Everton also sent proposals to the player but he has opted for a switch to Unai Emery’s side.

Romano reported on X: “Victor Lindelöf to Aston Villa, here we go! Medical underway right now approved by AVFC. The agreement is valid until June 2027 plus option until June 2028, higher proposal compared to Fiorentina/Everton. Lindelöf said yes and now set for medical.”

Lindelof joined United back in 2017 and made 284 appearances before the club before being let go at the end of the 2024-25 campaign. He started the final two games of the last season, as United lost 1-0 at Chelsea and beat Aston Villa 2-0 at Old Trafford.

What Victor Lindelof said after leaving Man Utd

Speaking after his final appearance, Lindelof said: "I've had so many good memories here. Just looking at the Stretford End here, I mean, I'm going to miss it a lot.

"They're [the fans] with us through absolutely everything, and it doesn't matter the result, every single week, they come here and they support us and they sing their souls out.

"I just want to say thank you so much for taking me in."

He added: "I'm leaving as a player, but I will always be a fan. I wish nothing but the best for the guys and everyone around the club. Yeah, hopefully next season will be a little better than this one. I'm very sure it's going to be."
