Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner is eager to keep hold of Marc Guehi in the final 24 hours of the transfer window
Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has revealed he told club chairman Steve Parish that the Eagles need to keep Marc Guehi at the club if they want to have a successful season.
Those comments came after Palace won 3-0 at Aston Villa, with Guehi scoring the second goal of the game with a fine curling effort early in the second half.
Paul Joyce of Times reported on Saturday that Liverpool had made a second bid of the window for Guehi. He said on X: “Liverpool have made a second bid for Marc Guehi of £35m plus a ten percent sell on clause.
“Crystal Palace seeking £35m plus £5m add ons for the England defender. Liverpool first proposed £35m fee to Palace officials in days after the Community Shield on August 10.”
Guehi played for Palace as they beat Liverpool on penalties to win the Community Shield. Despite the interest from the Reds, Guehi has continued to appear for Palace and helped the club reach the Europa Conference League.
What Oliver Glasner said about Marc Guehi
After the game, Glasner said: "I told the chairman we have to keep Marc if we want to play a successful season. We have no chance to find the right replacement in one day. We all agreed that we just sell Marc if we have the right replacement in the building.
"We wanted a replacement by 1 July. It is 31 August and we have no replacement. We have this agreement so it is clear from me. He is such a crucial player. He is one of our key players - he is our captain."
Palace rejected bids from Newcastle United last summer for Guehi and an approach from Tottenham Hotspur in January. They have been more open to selling Guehi this summer due to the player’s contract situation. He has just 12 months to run on his deal at Selhurst Park and has no plans to sign a new contract - putting the Eagles in a tough position. They either need to sell him on deadline day to ensure they secure a transfer fee or lose him for nothing in 12 months.
Marc Guehi reflects on goal and transfer speculation
On his goal at Villa Park, Guehi said: “I can't remember much. When you score goals like that, it's down the team performance. The credit should go to the team."
He was then asked what the club means to him: "A lot. I'm a south London boy, grew up in south London and captained the club from a uoung age. They have been fantastic to me and my family. A pleasure to play for this club."
The transfer rumours continue to surround the defender but he is keen to keep the focus off himself, as he added: "I'm okay. I guess so. I don't like the limelight.
"I'm glad I have a good club and good teammates around me. When you focus on what is important, the football, it makes it a bit easier."
