Manchester United are looking to sign a goalkeeper in the final 24 hours of the Premier League transfer window, according to reports - with the Red Devils having been linked with moves to land Aston Villa hero Emiliano Martinez and Royal Antwerp star Senne Lammens.
However, the transfer merry-go-round that has formed in recent hours should see manager Ruben Amorim opt for one of his compatriots instead of the aforementioned duo of targets - with Villa having been linked with Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa should Martinez depart for Old Trafford.
Report: Aston Villa Now Interested in Diogo Costa if Martinez Joins Man Utd
Diogo Costa in action for Porto
Reports earlier on Sunday from GIVEMESPORT transfer correspondent Fabrizio Romano stated that Martinez has agreed personal terms with United ahead of a potential move, with the two clubs now in dialogue over a last-gasp move north for the Argentine - and with the Red Devils having been linked with Lammens to replace Andre Onana for the past month, that could see the Belgian instead depart for Villa Park in a shock twist so late in the window.
However, should Martinez move to United, it's since emerged that Costa is a 'main option' for the Villans as his replacement - meaning that the Portugal international could be available.
United have been linked with him in the past, even before Amorim was manager, and if Costa does come onto the market, it could be the best move that United make - boasting similar European experience to Martinez, and being a similar age to Lammens.
Man Utd Should Move for 'Elite' Costa Instead of Martinez
Diogo Costa and Cristiano Ronaldo in conversation
Costa, born in Switzerland, moved to Portugal aged seven and began playing for Porto in 2011, aged just 12. Making his professional debut in the 2019/20 campaign, Costa had to bide his time to become Porto's first-choice stopper, but he took that into his stride in the 2021/22 campaign - and he hasn't looked back since.
Helping the club to win various major trophies during his time at the Estadio de Dragao, Costa has made a name for himself as a superb penalty saver, becoming the first goalkeeper to save three consecutive penalties in the Champions League. To add to that, he was branded as 'elite' for his efforts at EURO 2024, where he saved all three penalties in a shootout against Slovenia to see his team progress - and that form on the international scene continued when he was the hero again in the Nations League win over Spain in June.
Costa has become one of the best young keepers in Europe, and a move to the Premier League could be the catalyst for a strong career for the 25-year-old, who has already amassed 200 appearances for his boyhood club of Porto, including 138 in the Primera Liga.
Amorim has already personally asked United to sign Costa, who has been labelled as the 'best goalkeeper on the planet', and if he can get that deal done it will set United up for the now and for the future as he looks to rebuild their squad after some terrible performances in the league and domestic cups last season and even this season so far.
