Sunderland were dealt a blow after Chelsea recalled Marc Guiu less than a month after sending him out on loan.
The Black Cats have had a good start to the season, winning two of their first three Premier League games. They will survive if they keep going at the same rate, but they need more help.
Guiu made two substitute appearances for Sunderland, against Burnley and Brentford, but his time at the Stadium of Light is about to come to a premature end.
That has led to Sunderland opening talks to sign another striker on deadline day.
Sunderland have agreed to let Marc Guiu return to Chelsea following talks between the two clubs.
There was no recall clause but the Black Cats have sanctioned the Spaniard's return to West London.

Fabrizio Romano says Sunderland are in talks to sign Brian Brobbey
Sunderland already have four strikers on their books apart from Chelsea loanee Marc Guiu.
Wilson Isidor, Nazaryi Rusyn, Ahmed Abdullahi and Eliezer Mayenda are all at the club, but the Black Cats want more before the window shuts.
Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Regis Le Bris’ side have opened talks with Ajax to sign Brian Brobbey to strengthen their frontline.
The 23-year-old became a popular name after he scored 22 goals and provided 11 assists for Ajax in the 2023/24 campaign.
However, Brobbey had an underwhelming 2024/25 season, and he hasn’t played a minute of football for the Dutch giants so far this term.
Sunderland want to give him a way out, but Romano has claimed that this is not an easy deal to do.
He tweeted: “Sunderland work on deal to sign Brian Brobbey as new striker from Ajax.
“Not easy, but talks underway to try and get it done as Marc Guiu is expected to return to Chelsea on Deadline Day.
“SAFC are on it and also looking for a new CB!”

What Virgil van Dijk once said about Brian Brobbey
Brobbey is a very good player.
The Dutchman showed what he is all about two seasons ago, but just like every young player, he had his struggles in the following campaign.
However, Virgil van Dijk, who many think is the best centre-back on the planet, believes Brobbey is a ‘great’ talent.
He said in October 2022, as per Liverpool Echo: “I think he’s a great boy. He is a great talent and basically has everything. He is fast, strong and can finish well.”
It will be interesting to see if Sunderland can get this deal over the line.
