'Want him to stay': Virgil van Dijk urges Liverpool not to sell £40m player today after exit rumours

Liverpool managed to carry on their perfect record in the Premier League after they beat Arsenal 1-0.

The Reds were on the back foot for most of the first half, but after Arne Slot made a couple of tactical tweaks, it was clear that they were the team to beat.

Indeed, it was Dominik Szoboszlai’s 32-yard free-kick that made the difference in the game, with the Hungary international proving that his versatility has no bounds after he was used at right-back once again.

Now that the Reds’ most important game of the season so far is over, full focus turns towards deadline day, with Slot and Richard Hughes still involved in a fair few deals.

Virgil van Dijk urges Joe Gomez to stay after AC Milan make bid

Liverpool have already made a fair few changes to their team this summer.

Players such as Luis Diaz and Jarell Quansah have both been sold on, with others such as Florian Wirtz and Giovanni Leoni being brought in to help bolster Liverpool’s ranks.

Seeing as though there are still a couple of fringe players among the Reds’ ranks at the moment who could be sold before the 7 pm deadline, the transfer rumours have been rife.

And, in quotes relayed by Daily Mail journalist Lewis Steele, Virgil van Dijk has made his feelings clear about what he wants to happen with Joe Gomez after AC Milan made a bid for him.

“Of course (I want him to stay), he’s my friend! But it doesn’t work like that,” he said.

“I’m not the boss, this is not a friendly business. Let’s see what happens. Of course want him to stay, as a friend and as a player.”

Liverpool cannot afford to lose Joe Gomez, even if they sign Marc Guehi

One of the main transfer stories to have dominated headlines over the last few weeks is the potential move of Marc Guehi to Liverpool.

Slot has been looking for ways to bolster his defensive ranks this summer, with the likes of Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez being brought in to do exactly that.

However, since football is an ever-changing sport, nothing is set in stone, and as a result of these links to Guehi, it seems like Gomez could be about to exit.

As mentioned, AC Milan have made a bid for the defender, and even though Liverpool have said he can leave if they sign Guehi, it feels like that would be a massive mistake.

Gomez’s versatility, coupled with the experience he has, are second to none and, as shown by his cameo appearance against Arsenal on Sunday, he’s well-needed at Anfield.

Of course, only time will tell what the future has in store, but for now, it’s anyone’s guess what could happen.
