Nottingham Forest could provide solution for Leeds, £17.5m man 'expected to leave' - opinion

Leeds United are desperate to bring in one or two attacking options before the end of the window, and Nottingham Forest could provide Daniel Farke with the answer.

Just one goal in three Premier League games will be a concern for Daniel Farke, even if two of those three games have been against two of the Premier League’s Champions League sides in Newcastle and Arsenal.

Joel Piroe has struggled in his three starts this season and while Lukas Nmecha put himself about against Newcastle, the Germany international lacked any kind of threat. Dominic Calvert-Lewin is still very rusty.

Farke has made it public he wants more attacking options before the 7pm deadline and perhaps, Forest could have the solution for Leeds as they look to wave goodbye to a few players on deadline day.

Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi should be considered at Leeds

According to a report on The Mail’s deadline day blog (01/09, 7.40AM), Forest are trying to offload Taiwo Awoniyi before the deadline. Once upon a time, the former Liverpool man was a record £17.5m signing.

But now, Awoniyi is available with Chris Wood and new Forest signing Arnaud Kalimuendo sitting above the Nigeria international in the pecking order. Leeds have brought in physicality and height this summer.

Eight of Leeds’ 10 signings are internationals, too. Awoniyi is 28, stands at 6ft 1in but is renowned mostly for his big frame and strength. He is the perfect type of striker for Leeds, one to consider on deadline day.

Jesse Marsch admits he wanted to sign Taiwo Awoniyi at Leeds

A player that had starred in the Bundesliga with Union Berlin, Forest signed former Liverpool striker Awoniyi in the summer of 2022 and he has since scored 17 goals in 73 appearances for Nuno’s side.

But prior to his move to Forest, Jesse Marsch once claimed he looked at bringing Awoniyi to Leeds in 2022. Instead, Leeds failed to sign a striker and spent a club-record fee on Georginio Rutter in January.

A move that failed given Rutter was unproven and exactly what Leeds didn’t need amid a relegation fight. With Leeds expecting another relegation fight, Adam Underwood has got to consider Awoniyi again.
