Just in: Everton exploring late deadline day move for Bundesliga midfield 'wizard'

Everton are reportedly eyeing Freiburg's Merlin Rohl as a possible deadline day deal to hand David Moyes a desired central midfielder.

Patrick Boyland of The Athletic reports that the 23-year-old has emerged as a late target for the Toffees and it could be a deal that goes right to the wire. The Merseyside outfit had looked to sign West Ham United's Tomas Soucek but an approach fo Moyes' former Czech midfielder was turned down.

Rohl is a long-term target who was on the club's wishlist last January but a potential switch failed to come to fruition. He caught the eye while representing Germany at this summer's Under-21 European Championships and is viewed as a versatile option to strengthen Moyes' midfield.

A new midfielder is on Everton's agenda in the closing stages of the summer transfer window because Idrissa Gueye will depart for the African Cup of Nations in December. But the potential signing of Rohl will also enable academy graduate Harrison Armstrong to secure a loan move to the EFL Championship, thereby gaining more first-team opportunities.

The Toffees have made a bright start to the season, following a 1-0 loss to Leeds United in their opener, with wins over Brighton 2-0 and Wolves 3-2. The Merseysiders have made some exciting signings, including Jack Grealish and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who have bounced back from difficult past seasons and thrived under Moyes thus far.
