Wayne Rooney expects a key member of Pep Guardiola’s squad to leave Manchester City on Deadline Day.
City have done plenty of business over the summer months to strengthen their ranks; however, there is still plenty of business to wrap up.
The main focus on Deadline Day for the Manchester club will be outgoings, as Guardiola has made it clear that he wants to work with a smaller squad throughout the 2025/26 campaign.
Manuel Akanji is expected to leave Man City before Monday’s deadline, while there is also doubt around the futures of Ilkay Gundogan and Nathan Ake, given the lack of minutes they have received this season so far.
Speaking about Man City’s defeat to Brighton on Sunday, Rooney thinks the situation of one star at the Etihad Stadium has not helped the team, and the former Man United star now expects him to leave the Premier League giants.

Wayne Rooney expects Ederson to leave Manchester City
The goalkeeper situation at Man City has been far from ideal throughout the opening phase of the Premier League season, as Guardiola stated that Ederson was his number one goalkeeper, but the Brazilian has remained on the bench due to uncertainty over his future.

The 32-year-old was on the bench once again against Brighton, and speaking about the goalkeeper’s situation at City, Rooney thinks it has not helped the team and that he expects Ederson to leave on Deadline Day.
“I think City, and what doesn’t help obviously, is the Ederson situation. I’d imagine he’ll probably leave in the next 24 hours, ” the pundit said on The Wayne Rooney Show.
“He’s [Guardiola] brought in young Trafford in goal, and he’s a very good goalkeeper, but Ederson’s still sat there.”
Ederson is expected to join Fenerbahce before the transfer window shuts, which will trigger Man City to complete the signing of Gianluigi Donnarumma.
The goalkeeper situation at the Etihad Stadium is not ideal, and it could be about to get even messier over the coming months.
Man City are set to make a big mistake with James Trafford
James Trafford labelled Ederson as “one of a kind” as the Englishman explained his admiration for the Brazilian upon joining Man City.
The ideal situation at the Manchester club would have been for the 22-year-old to learn under the City legend for a season, before the Brazilian left next summer when his contract expires.
Instead, Guardiola has opted to sign a player in Donnarumma who doesn’t suit the Spanish coach’s style, which could force Trafford to leave Man City next summer, as the England international will not want to sit on the bench.
This is a situation that could get messy over the coming months as Trafford joined Man City with the hope that it would help him become England’s number one for next summer’s World Cup.
When Donnarumma joins the Manchester club, there is a chance that the 22-year-old might not be on the plane.
