Transfer Deadline Day

As September dawns on Transfer Deadline Day, there is still a conviction that Everton will continue to bring additional players in to strengthen specific areas of David Moyes's squad.

The manager at one point said he needed 8 or 9 new players to both make up for the swath of departures at the end of last season and to enable him to improve the squad, particularly in attack, where it has been shockingly poor in recent seasons.

That portion of the remit appears to have been fulfilled in spades, with Everton's forward play improved beyond all recognition by the addition two world class footballers in Gack Grealish and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.

The ceaseless clamour for the club to make a statement signing at right-back continues unabated, with Jake O'Brien shouldering the responsibility of this important position as far as defensive cover is concerned, but obviously lacking in his valiant attempts to support the attack, notwithstanding some excellent gaols scored last season.

There is also talk of needing to strengthen defence amid the continuing absence of Jarrad Barnthwaite, who is a massive miss in the back four, as evidenced by two glaringly simple goals given up far too easily at Molineux on Saturday. But talk of Tomas Soucek coming in as a talent who Moyes knows and trusts seems to fall well short of filling the huge gap created by Branthwaite's absence.

Everton looking to sign Merlin Rohl on Deadline Day

Everton are looking to complete the signing of Merlin Rohl from SC Freiburg, according to Patrick Boyland of The Athletic.

Paul Joyce of The Times reports that the two clubs are discussing a loan with an obligation to buy and the deal could cost a total of €20m.

Having had approaches rejected for West Ham's Tomas Soucek recently, the Toffees turned their attention towards the 23-year-old German midfielder they've kept tabs on for the last 12 months and also tried to sign in January.

A 6'4" attack-minded midfielder, Rohl's composure on the ball, line-breaking passes and physical prowess while winning duels stand out. He featured for Germany at this summer's U21 European Championships.

Rohl's arrival could also lead to Harrison Armstrong leaving on another loan deal in search of regular playing time. David Moyes previously admitted that the club has offers for the 18-year-old midfielder who spent the second half of last season on loan at Derby County in the Championship.

Youssef Chermiti off to Rangers

Patrick Boyland of The Athletic also mentions that Youssef Chermiti is expected to complete his move to Rangers today.

"The deal for the 21-year-old striker comprises an initial fee of around £8million, plus £2m in add-ons. The package also includes a significant sell-on clause based on the profit Rangers make on any future transfer," the report added.

Everton had signed Chermiti from Sporting CP in 2023 for a reported fee of £14 million, including add-ons. He has had an injury-ridden spell at Merseyside and has struggled for game time.

Chermiti has made 24 appearances for the Blues without scoring a single goal.

The Premier League transfer window closes on Monday, 1 September at 7 pm; we will endeavour to stay abreast of any developments as they happen, with the Live For um also open for discussion and reaction.

Thank you Michael. Two potential defensive targets have gone elsewhere; Lindelof (CB) to Aston Villa and Sergio Fort (RB) to Mallorca.

Posted 01/09/2025 at 08:29:55

If we get a right-back that can go straight into the team, I can't see the need of a new centre-back. O'Brien will be a good option from the bench if Branthwaite is back from injury.

We really need a right-back, or even two?

Posted 01/09/2025 at 08:44:23

It's bizare isn't it. The 2 neglected areas for years, striker and a right back. Hopefully a right back comes on an a replacement for Gana as he's also off to Afcon.

Posted 01/09/2025 at 08:48:10

We haven't neglected buying a striker. We just haven't bought any particularly good ones. We even bought one about 2 months ago.

Posted 01/09/2025 at 08:58:34

It's not over until it's over.

I can just imagine the shock announcement that Branthwaite, Pickford and Ndiaye have been sold to Liverpool.

Cut to a scene of Friedkin unmasked, Scooby Doo style, to find it's the supposedly dead Kenwright all along, announcing how he has just saved the club from PSR.

Posted 01/09/2025 at 09:00:25

Hopefully some magic will appear before 7pm tonight

Posted 01/09/2025 at 09:02:50

Barry, is obviously not premier league ready, but I wouldn’t completely write him off at this early stage.

With football, now being a squad game, we definitely need at least a couple more players in if we are to make ourselves more competitive, and after watching us playing some very good attacking football, (albeit against one of the weaker teams) then a good attacking right back, and a strong defensive midfielder, would be at the top of my wish list🤞

Posted 01/09/2025 at 09:03:49

On strikers, I think we just have to accept that we don't have the resources to buy a high quality striker, looking at the sort of money changing hands for the likes of Isak and Etitike.

In addition to hoping maybe Barry will fulfil his promise, I'd suggest we may also have a more than handy option in Ndiaye, then Dibling can come in at RF. Not a bad attack then.

A RB is mandatory. I'd then like to see a better option at LB and ideally some LCB cover. Ake would fit perfectly and it seems he is somewaht out of favour at City and might be open to a move. He could even at a push play DM while Gana is away at Afcon. Pull that off and we would have had a very decent window.

Posted 01/09/2025 at 09:08:13

It's a worry, the lack of even rumours are non existent today. Could be a day of nothing.

Posted 01/09/2025 at 09:09:07

And yet Mark Sunderland have got Bryan Brobbey from Ajax for €20m plus add ons today. Probably not going to hit the Haaland heights but will probably get them some important goals and will be ready to go from the off.

Posted 01/09/2025 at 09:09:09

Ryan (6), I don’t know about magic Ryan but if a couple of more than adequate defenders are not signed today then we will struggle until the January window and really struggle when the African Cup starts—— not being pessimistic just being realistic.

Posted 01/09/2025 at 09:10:30

Ryan [6]. Supposedly we are looking to sign a midfield wizard Merlin Röhl from Freiburg today and he has already arrived to Merseyside for a medical.

Posted 01/09/2025 at 09:11:08

John [5] brilliant proper lol!

Posted 01/09/2025 at 09:12:03

We need someone players definitely Dave. Hopefully players that will have a good spell with us.

Posted 01/09/2025 at 09:16:48

Brobbey hasn’t really ever delivered on some very early promise. It’s a small fee because of that.

Posted 01/09/2025 at 09:18:12

Why has everyone got a downer on Barry already?

Posted 01/09/2025 at 09:19:10

He's never going to a top team Robert but I reckon he'd fit well with what we now have behind him providing service.

Posted 01/09/2025 at 09:19:36

A third attempt at asking whether Harrison Armstrong could be our new RB. Following in the footsteps of other converted midfield players like Lewis-Skelly and Alexander Arnold. Anyone?

Posted 01/09/2025 at 09:21:38

The Rhol story has legs - but he’s an attacking mid - eh, I think we’re ok for those.

Let’s see if the Rohl deal is the real deal. Sorry, I felt a bit queasy writing that.

Posted 01/09/2025 at 09:24:12

We don't need another number 10, but sounds like this rohl fella is getting done

Posted 01/09/2025 at 09:24:35

Robert, do we really want to be negating his best attributes just to fill a hole in the team? He doesn't seem quick enough either.

Posted 01/09/2025 at 09:26:38

I don't think Rohl is an attacking midfielder. He's played part of his time as a fill in full back (on the left not right)

Posted 01/09/2025 at 09:28:10

Sorry Robert its a no from me for Harrison Armstrong as RB.

The way the side is structured atm, with a lot of attacking players in midfield we really need some specialised defenders. I'm with Dave A earlier in the thread - without a couple of defensive additions we will struggle against quality teams.

Even a poor Wolves side exposed this on the rare occasions they got at our back 4.

Posted 01/09/2025 at 09:28:52

If we fail to sign a right back this window , it either means that:

1. Moyes is happy with Patterson and O’Brien.

2. Our prime RB targets did not want to come to Everton (Tete, Walker-Peters, etc).

Posted 01/09/2025 at 09:30:47

Ive seem Merlin Rohl a few times and was impressed. Think hes more adaptable CM than a specific No.10

Posted 01/09/2025 at 09:33:32

Weird one. Exactly what we don't need.

Posted 01/09/2025 at 09:34:17

Robert (18) I think at a guess Armstrong would make a better full back than any other full back or pretend one we have on the books at the moment, he has the essential football brain, not frightened to hold onto the ball before he releases it to make a good pass—— I certainly hope he stays here rather than go on loan, he will be definitely needed with this weak squad we’ve got and yet it looks like we are selling one or two players, must be to cover any PSR, or whatever you call it, loops.

Posted 01/09/2025 at 09:34:29

This is the 3rd transfer window in a row that Moyes has been in for Rohl so he must see something in him.

Posted 01/09/2025 at 09:37:30

Well, if Rohl is being brought in as centre mid then that means Soucek can carry on pushing shopping trolleys around at West Ham, so that’s good. And we’re investing in youth. Although Armstrong might be justified at feeling miffed if he’s loaned out. Small margins in experience I guess.

Posted 01/09/2025 at 09:40:18

I just don’t understand this. We’ve had months to scout and recruit players for known positions where we lack depth, notably RB, and yet many still believe the recruitment team is going to suddenly unveil two or three signings in the last 12 hours of the window!

What a joke of a process if they do.

Posted 01/09/2025 at 09:40:52

Andrew (29), Sounds like Moyes that Andrew—— when in doubt sign someone you’ve worked with before!

Posted 01/09/2025 at 09:42:32

Brian Brobbey Got 4 goals in a crap Dutch league. It’s a no from me.

Posted 01/09/2025 at 09:43:34

I've mentioned the myth that is Roman Dixon on a previous thread. Seems to have gone off the radar. Michael K looked into where he was and drew a blank. There were rumours he was off to Stockport.

In the little I saw of him, he looked promising.

As for forwards, do we not have a young Braiden Graham in our midst. Handy back up?

Posted 01/09/2025 at 09:45:40

I’m not sure Robert, because I haven’t seen enough of Harrison Armstrong. He’s good on the ball, so that’s always a big plus for anyone playing fullback, but I’m not sure if he has the necessary aggression to play in this position and I also doubt that Moyes, would play him there because he’s the type of manager, that will probably be big, about players having to really know the game to be played in certain positions?

I watched the second half of the Liverpool b Arsenal game yesterday and was thinking that although he ended up being the match winner, I think if you put Grealish and kept swapping him with N’Diaye, up against the lad who played right back, then he might not be able to cope defensively?

Posted 01/09/2025 at 09:47:01

We could be on a Rohl if Merlin is a Wizard in midfield.

Was hoping for news on Juanlu Sanchez whose predicted move to Napoli has stalled or evaporated. He is comfortable in many roles as well as RB, may still happen though no noises coming in that direction.

Although it has been good thus far, we still need more quality options, still hopeful of a surprise or two. Why is it left to the vinegar stroke to get some deals over the line ? Every chance that something doesn't quite run to plan and time has run out.

Posted 01/09/2025 at 09:47:43

If we don't sign a RB, this will be one of the strangest windows we've ever had.

Meaning, we've spent quite a few quid and brought in some real quality, including a player I never thought I'd see in an Everton shirt, but to not sign a RB when we clearly have money to spend is ridiculous. You could understand it if we were skint, maybe, but to have the funds and overlook this glaring weakness is just bizarre.

Posted 01/09/2025 at 09:49:08

Ian, Graham looks like a talent but he is only just stepping up from the U18s to the U21s so he's way off 1st team football yet.

Posted 01/09/2025 at 09:51:12

Dom king said this morning on talksport that Everton are in for a center back and that's a priority. He said its going to get done

Posted 01/09/2025 at 09:52:26

Definitely need at least one right back. But I have no idea why so many are clamouring for another left back?

Mykolenko is more than serviceable as a good, defensive left back and is now supported by a very promising young left back.

Left back is a long way from being a priority in my opinion

Posted 01/09/2025 at 09:53:07

John #5, that made me laugh. You could make a horror film out of that.

Derek, I hope Röhl doesn’t turn out to be a Swiss Roll. I’ll get me coat

Btw, he’s a defensive MF player.

Posted 01/09/2025 at 10:04:06

Dunno about Myko anymore, Annika. Maybe not this window but if we could get an upgrade on him I’d take it. He now looks most likely to get brain flatulence at the back these days, not Keane. Him and Tarkowski. But, yes, an attack-minded right back is very much preferred.

Posted 01/09/2025 at 10:04:23

Annika - and we already signed a left back this summer

Posted 01/09/2025 at 10:05:17

Rohl is reported to be another number ten. How many do we need ? It's like the year we signed Rooney/ Siggy and Klausen. Please buy a full back that can cover RB and LB.

Posted 01/09/2025 at 10:05:32

Lamptey from Brighton has just been sold. We could have had him? Edouard Crystal Palace on the move, may be worth a punt.

Posted 01/09/2025 at 10:07:41

Look at Man City, currently have,

4 Goal Keepers.

3 Left backs.

2 Right backs.

9 Midfield players.

But they also have 6 Centre halves.

It could well be they are parting with Ake or Akanji ?

For me Ake, would fill our problems, because he could play anywhere across the back four, maybe even DM.

Posted 01/09/2025 at 10:15:30

Looks like Villa might have Jadon Sancho to call on when they visit the HD a week on Saturday.

Posted 01/09/2025 at 10:16:00

Annika (40)Yes the young German ladoo needs time on the field before we make judgement on him, Mykolenko is a different kettle of fish — some think he is okay for now, some like me, don’t rate him and according to one fan he is the best left back in the premier league so take your pick from that!

Posted 01/09/2025 at 10:19:15

Bobble reporting the Röhl deal.

Don't know much about the lad. Could he play defensive midfield? Not a lot of attacking contributions in his stats.

Posted 01/09/2025 at 10:20:27

Mykolenko is adequate but that is one position we have been a bit spoiled in over the past few years so I guess people are expecting more.

Posted 01/09/2025 at 10:21:38

Colin @ 41, if he can speak Inuit, he could be an Eskimo/Arctic Roll ! :-)

Posted 01/09/2025 at 10:23:03

Rohl at 23, youngster with limited Bundesliga experience, probably replaces Armstrong who goes out on loan.

I think Moyes wanted PL experience from latest recruits, the failure to land Soucek obviously forced him to change plan.

Posted 01/09/2025 at 10:24:12

If we are in for Merlin Rohl I would like to see us get Arthur Melo and Lancelot Carbon to start the whole Knights of the Round Table theme.

Posted 01/09/2025 at 10:24:33

Andrew, 38, appreciate that but look at Arsenal chucking in a 15-year-old (and a few days) and Liverpool giving a 16-year-old a go. You’ll never know what these lads are made of if you don’t throw them in every now and then. Nothing new really. Loads of young players out there waiting for a chance. Imagine it's easier if the team is doing ok, less pressure if mistakes are made.

I always think loans are a bit of a conundrum. Plenty of lads go out, do well, get a taste for playing every week, and then fancy a move elsewhere. Which means we could end up missing out on some players we’ve actually developed ourselves..having said that, don't ask for recent examples!

Posted 01/09/2025 at 10:25:34

Lamptey joined Fiorentina for 6mill surely he would of been perfect for us ? Bargain

Posted 01/09/2025 at 10:25:53

So pleased we are linked with Merlin Rohl. Watched him last season and not knowing anything about him I was impressed, skillful and strong. I will go as far to say he will be better value than what the dark side payed for his fellow countryman.

Fingers crossed for this one.

Posted 01/09/2025 at 10:26:23

We will get injuries all through the season you can bet on it, thats the same for every team though, you can't have too many players.

O'Brien is not a natural full back, he's too tall and lanky to be nippy enough, we are short of a decent RB.

Branthwaite is getting injured too often for my liking so we do need extra cover there.

I think we are ok elsewhere, although left back could be a problem.

Posted 01/09/2025 at 10:26:56

From Wikipedia on Merlin Rohl

A tall, versatile and technically gifted midfielder, Röhl has also played at left-back. His playing style and physical stature has earned him comparisons to Leon Goretzka
