Sunderland ‘strike agreement’ to sign Dutch international with medical plans ‘revealed’

Sunderland have reportedly reached an agreement with RB Leipzig to sign defender Lutsharel Geertruida on transfer deadline day.

The 25-year-old only joined Leipzig last summer from Feyenoord for around for around €20m, but the defender is allegedly ‘dissatisfied’ and is open to a departure.

Nottingham Forest and Atalanta BC had been credited with an interest in Geertruida, but the 17-cap Netherland international now looks set to join newly-promoted Premier League side Sunderland.

According to The Athletic, the Black Cats have agreed to sign Geertruida on a loan deal with an option to buy, and the defender has already landed in Sunderland ahead of undergoing a medical.

Geertruida made a total of 35 appearances across all competitions last season - including eight in the Champions League - for a Leipzig outfit who finished seventh in the Bundesliga.

The versatile defender, who primarily operates at right-back, could soon become Sunderland’s 13th summer signing, although one of those - striker Marc Guiu - is ‘expected’ to make a swift return to parent club Chelsea.

Defenders Omar Alderete, Nordi Mukiele, Reinildo Mandava and Arthur Masuaku are among the arrivals that have already been added to Regis Le Bris’ first-team squad this summer.
