Jadon Sancho is nearing the exit door at Manchester United with a Premier League rival agreeing a deal.

Manchester United are ticking the boxes off one, by one, even if Ruben Amorim would have wanted to clear the decks a lot sooner than deadline day.

Before the summer transfer window even opened, it was clear that Marcus Rashford wasn’t going to be a United player this season and that players like Antony and Alejandro Garnacho had played their last games for the club. One other who has taken a step closer to leaving Old Trafford after a summer of near misses is Jadon Sancho.

Jadon Sancho agrees move to Aston Villa

Interestingly, the Italian journalist has been coy about the specifics of the move posting on X: “BREAKING: Jadon Sancho to Aston Villa, here we go! Deal in place on initial loan from Manchester United. Green light from United and deal being sealed with formal steps to follow next. Sancho will join #AVFC.”

Given the riches in the Premier League, it looks like his options have been limited without any compromise and Villa, restricted heavily by PSR, have made a last ditch swoop to bolster their squad. An initial loan with the details of an option or obligation to buy would suit United more than a straight loan, but at least his sizeable salary would be off the books, for now.

Sancho’s goal contribution record of 95 in 118 Bundesliga appearances for Borussia Dortmund saw him become one of Europe’s most in demand wingers when United signed him in the summer of 2021. That form seems a long time ago now with just 12 goals in 89 Premier League appearances showing just how far his stock has fallen.

What Sancho needs to remember is how he got into the position to play for Dortmund and become a European football star after four years struggling to find any consistency or form.

Why Sancho needs to remember where he came from to become a success again

Speaking to The Guardian in 2019 as a fresh faced teenager, Sancho seemed to appreciate the opportunity that he had as a professional footballer, a sentiment he could do with remembering: “It hasn’t been easy. I’ve had to work for this. Everyone around me is keeping me grounded and keeping me focused. I’m improving every day and Marco Reus, Mario Götze and Axel Witsel are great role models to me and everyone else in the team. It’s really nice to have them around telling me what to do, and what’s not good, helping me solve things I wouldn’t solve by myself, so I’m happy.”

Sancho adds: “[Coming to Germany] was about the youngsters here getting opportunities. I really felt Dortmund was the right club for me. They spoke to me and said the right things I wanted to hear. Now they’re showing it and I couldn’t thank them more.”

Sancho’s bank account might be flourishing, however, his football career is in danger of becoming a damp squib if his loan at Villa follows that of his time at Chelsea. In a World Cup year, he should be motivated, if football is as important to him as it was when he was a teenager that is.
