Erik ten Hag sacked as Man Utd flop lasts just three games at Bayer Leverkusen

Manchester United flop Erik ten Hag has been sacked by Bayer Leverkusen after a mere four months in charge of the German side.

The Dutchman, whose ill-fated spell in charge of United ended when he was sacked and replaced by Ruben Amorim in October last year, replaced Xabi Alonso at the Bundesliga side when Xabi Alonso moved to Real Madrid.

But he's managed just one point from his opening two games in Germany, losing 2-1 at home to Hoffenheim on the opening weekend despite taking an early lead through ex-Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah's goal, before throwing away a 3-1 lead away against 10-man Werder Bremen to draw 3-3 on Saturday.

That result left them slumped in the bottom half of the table, with his only victory a 4-0 thrashing of fourth-tier outfit SG in the DFB-Pokal cup before their league campaign began.

A statement read: "Bayer 04 Leverkusen have parted ways with head coach Erik ten Hag.

"This was decided by the shareholders' committee, the club’s supervisory body, on the recommendation of the management of Bayer 04.

"Training will be overseen by the current backroom staff on an interim basis."

Simon Rolfes, managing director sport, said: “This decision was not an easy one for us. Nobody wanted to take this step.

"However, the past few weeks have shown that building a new and successful team with this setup is not feasible. We firmly believe in the quality of our team and will now do everything we can to take the next steps in our development with a new setup.”

Fernando Carro, CEO, added: “A parting of ways at this early stage of the season is painful, but we felt it was necessary.
