Is Lamine Yamal Barcelona’s new penalty taker?

Barcelona star Lamine Yamal was on Sunday night drawn on whether he has been appointed the club’s new first-choice penalty taker for the season ahead.

This of course comes after the 18-year-old stepped up to take responsibility from 12 yards at Vallecas.

Barcelona marked their return to action yesterday evening, making the trip to Madrid for a La Liga meeting with Rayo Vallecano.

When all was said and done, the Blaugrana were forced to settle for a share of the spoils, owing to a disappointing 1-1 draw.

The aforementioned Lamine, meanwhile, was responsible for the visitors’ only goal of the clash.

This came late in the first-half, when the Spanish international converted from the penalty spot in confident fashion.

As much marked Barcelona’s first spot-kick of the 2025/26 campaign.

It also came with veteran frontman Robert Lewandowski – responsible for taking the club’s penalties last season – on the bench.

Speaking to the media on the back of the full-time whistle, Lamine was therefore asked directly if he can be considered the new no.1 spot-kick taker in Hansi Flick’s squad.

The young winger, though, kept his cards close to his chest, in responding:

“I was feeling confident, so I took it. We’ll see.”
