Opinion: The craziest Everton transfer rumour that didn’t come true this summer, he’s mocked…

It’s been a very busy transfer window both in and out of the door at Everton.

Several first-teamers left upon the expiry of their contracts, leaving David Moyes and his Everton chiefs with a big job on their hands.

Moyes wanted 10 new additions, and he’s going to come very close to that figure, with Merlin Rohl set to become the ninth signing.

Rohl has been undergoing his medical at Finch Farm today ahead of a loan with an option to buy deal worth around £21m.

With the window set to slam shut this evening and no further additions expected, we’ve looked back at the craziest transfer rumour of the summer that never came true.

Everton’s craziest transfer rumour of the summer

If Everton supporters were told at the start of the window that they’d be signing Jack Grealish and Tyler Dibling, few would’ve believed it.

However, perhaps the craziest rumour of the summer that never materialised was when Everton were trying to sign Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott.

The Toffees haven’t signed a player from their fierce Merseyside rivals for over 30 years, when Gary Ablett joined in 1992.

What makes it even more bizarre is the fact that Elliott has previously mocked Everton’s 30-year trophy drought.

In a fixture between Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, the 22-year-old flashed a 30 gesture at former Toffees striker Richarlison.

Ultimately, Elliott is going to end up joining Aston Villa on an initial loan with an obligation to buy worth £35m.

Everton were also surprisingly trying to sign Kobbie Mainoo

Another pretty bonkers rumour emerged over the last few days that comes pretty close to Elliott.

It came to light that Everton were exploring a deal to sign Kobbie Mainoo from Manchester United, which came as a real shock to both sets of supporters.

Ruben Amorim hasn’t given Mainoo much game time since he replaced Erik ten Hag, prompting the England international to hand in a loan request.

That gave the Toffees hope of landing another statement signing, however, United are refusing to sanction his sale.

That would’ve been one of the best signings of the summer.
