Now their focus is on a versatile midfielder like Mainoo, who wants regular game time ahead of the World Cup. Meanwhile, United are in no mood to let him go and want him to fight for a place in Amorim’s squad. Interestingly, Paul Robinson has also suggested that Leeds United should sign the 20-year-old midfielder, while reports have also emerged that United are looking at Morten Hjulmand as an alternative to Mainoo. This shows that the club is considering future plans, but at the moment, they don’t want to let Mainoo go.

Amorim must show some flexibility in his approach. Injuries to Mount and Cunha could open up spaces in midfield, and Mainoo showed against Burnley that he can make an impact if given the right opportunity. Amorim could either return to the back four to create another midfield space or capitalise on passing by giving him a creative role deeper down. For both United’s reputation and future, Mainoo must find the right path. If he gets consistent opportunities, he could make a huge contribution not just to the club, but to England too. Spurs are seriously interested, but his stay at Old Trafford would be the best move.
