Manchester United have confirmed a player they only wanted to sell and not loan out has departed on a permanent basis, and a potentially lucrative clause has been included.

A hectic summer window was always on the cards at Old Trafford and that’s exactly how it’s unfolded for Man Utd. Exits were just as important as arrivals and after initial struggles to offload unwanted players, Man Utd made multiple breakthroughs in the final hours.

Rasmus Hojlund joined Napoli and the full details in that deal can be found here. Elsewhere, Jadon Sancho will join Aston Villa on a season-long loan.

Another winger, Antony, was also on the chopping block and a reunion with Real Betis was explored all throughout the summer.

Betis favoured an initial loan move but Man Utd made their position clear – they wanted a permanent sale.

The two clubs agreed a deal worth €22m plus 3m in add-ons in the run-up to Monday’s 7pm deadline. And according to both clubs involved, the transfer is now official.

A Man Utd statement on their website began: “Manchester United and Real Betis have reached an agreement for the permanent transfer of Antony, subject to international clearance and registration.”

Man Utd have not only waved goodbye to Antony for good, but they’ve also inserted a potentially lucrative sell-on clause into the terms.

Man Utd successfully negotiated a 50 percent sell-on clause which applies to the profit Betis make on any sale.

As such, if Antony were sold for €50m in a few years’ time, Man Utd would receive half of the profit Betis made.

In this example, Betis would make €25m profit and United would receive a further €12.5m.
