Aston Villa seal deadline day hat-trick as Emi Martinez stays put

The Argentina international, left out of Sunday’s 3-0 defeat to Crystal Palace as speculation swirled around his future, has remained at Villa Park after United instead opted to sign Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp.

Villa, hampered all summer by spending restrictions, enjoyed a productive finish to the transfer window as they agreed deals for defender Victor Lindelof, United winger Jadon Sancho and swooped for Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott.

The latter is joining on an initial season-long loan deal which includes a £35million obligation to buy next summer, dependent on the 22-year-old making 10 appearances this term.

Elliott was valued by the Reds at £50m earlier in the window but Villa were able to secure his signing in the final hours of the window.

Sancho is also joining on loan for the season, with Villa expected to pay at least 80 per cent of his £200,000-a-week salary. It is believed the figure could rise to 100 per cent if certain bonuses are hit. The deals for Elliott and Sancho were on course to be completed late last night.

Lindelof, a free agent after leaving United at the end of last season, has signed a two-year deal and will provide valuable cover in the heart of defence.

Yet it was the future of Martinez, under the spotlight since he left the pitch in tears following the final home match of last season, which provided the day’s biggest intrigue.

The World Cup winner is understood to have made clear his desire to leave and join United, with Villa willing to let him depart earlier in the summer.

But despite renewed interest from the Red Devils over the weekend, senior Villa officials were insisting late on Sunday night no concrete offer for the keeper had been made.

Those claims were backed up on Monday when United agreed a deal with Antwerp to sign Lammens for an initial £18.1m.

Reports in Turkey claimed Galatasaray were willing to offer Martinez, who turns 33 on Tuesday, an alternative route out but the keeper was not interested.

With Villa now unable to source a replacement, Martinez will be reintegrated into the squad. Repairing a relationship with supporters damaged by the events of recent days should be high on his agenda.
