Crystal Palace have missed out on a transfer at the final stages of deadline day.

Disaster has struck again for Crystal Palace, who have seen another deal collapse on deadline day. The Eagles missed out on defender Igor Julio, with the Brighton defender deciding to join West Ham instead due to feeling he will play more regular football in East London.

That deal - or lack thereof - played a key role in Marc Guehi failing to seal a departure despite having a medical with Liverpool ahead of what was supposed to be a £35million move.

With Palace failing to find a replacement for Guehi despite the signing of young centre-back Jaydee Canvot, it was decided that Guehi would stay despite the Eagles running the risk of selling the England international on the cheap in January as a result.

That’s not a situation that will likely please Guehi, despite his love and respect for the club, but the Eagles felt they had to protect their own sporting interests ahead of a big season that will include a European campaign.

Palace did get some business done, signing the aforementioned Canvot and Christian Uche, who joined on a season-long loan deal. They were also chasing a deal to sign Tottenham star Manor Solomon, who impressed on loan with Leeds United last season, playing a key role in their promotion.

But despite handing in a deal sheet in a bid to get the deal done, it fell apart at the final moment. That has allowed Villarreal to step in as they look to add extra cover out wide following the sale of Yeremy Pino to Palace.

Fabrizio Romano posted on X: “EXCLUSIVE: Villarreal working on last minute move to sign Manor Solomon from Tottenham. Negotiations underway after Palace deal off.” He added: “Exclusive story confirmed: Manor Solomon to Villarreal, deal agreed and here we go! Straight loan from Tottenham, salary covered and now working on paperwork.”

Villarreal have sold a few key players this summer but they have also spend significant money to replace those who have left, including the club-record signing of Euro 2024 star Georges Mikautadze, while they also signed Renato Veiga from Chelsea on a big-money deal.

Palace have missed out on depth out wide, while Oliver Glasner will be delighted to keep Guehi, he will be very disappointed to miss out on the new signings. Leeds United were also heavily linked with a move for Solomon throughout the summer after the winger’s loan spell there last season, but they did not push for a deal in the final stages of the window. The Whites were expected to sign Harry Wilson from Fulham, but that deal also fell through late on.
