Newcastle United's 37-word statement confirming Alexander Isak's British-record transfer to Liverpool late into deadline day spoke volumes - and then some.

"Newcastle United can announce the sale of striker Alexander Isak to Liverpool for a significant, British-record transfer fee," it read on the club's website. "The Sweden international joined the Magpies from Real Sociedad in 2022 and made 109 appearances in all competitions."

While head coach Eddie Howe would have absolutely preferred to keep the striker - given how the saga unfolded it makes sense for both camps to part ways. Nick Wolmetade and Yoane Wissa joining as his replacements does at least soften the blow.

The latter's £55million arrival has taken spending at St James' Park to well over £200million with Anthony Elanga, Jacob Ramsey and Malick Thiaw also joining permanently, while Aaron Ramsdale has signed on loan.

Even with the departure of Isak, Newcastle have arguably strengthened their squad as a whole and have a dream chance to only increase that depth in January, while also getting one over on Liverpool.

Deadline day was particularly chaotic at Anfield with the Premier League champions trying to sign Isak alongside Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi. A £35million deal for the latter - who has just 12 months to run on his contract - went down to the wire but ultimately fell through as Palace were unable to bring in an adequate replacement.

The Magpies saw bids for double what Liverpool had accepted turned down last summer and, though Thiaw is a new arrival, Dan Burn and Fabian Schar are both 33 while Sven Botman has been plagued by injuries.

That could mean Newcastle go into the next few windows looking for another new centre-back and Guehi could absolutely be a target. Assuming he does not sign an extension, he could be available at an even cheaper price, in January, if the Eagles still want to receive a fee.

Clubs outside of England will hold the advantage as they can agree a pre-contract deal, but that should not necessarily stop Newcastle trying to sign him. The dream scenario would be that he accepts the move to Newcastle early next year and helps Howe's side seal the ultimate revenge on Liverpool after their move for Isak.

It's perhaps not that likely to happen but, given their long-term interest and Palace's stance, it can't be ruled out, either.
