The summer transfer window has now officially closed and, for Manchester United, it has largely been a successful one. Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo arrive as Premier League-proven players while Benjamin Sesko has a very high ceiling, but is also capable of making an immediate impact.
Diego Leon, mostly for the future, has also signed with goalkeeper Senne Lammens joining on deadline day to solve a clear issue in between the sticks. Midfield was another priority position for Ruben Amorim and, despite interest in Carlos Baleba, Angelo Stiller and several others, United did not make any signings in that area.
With Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo seemingly out of favour, Amorim's favoured midfield partnership has, so far this season, been captain Bruno Fernandes alongside Casemiro.
Even though the trading period has now closed, United can still bring in a new central midfielder but that will - of course - require them to dive into the free agent market.
With that being said, as per Transfermarkt, The Manchester Evening News has taken a closer look at three players not contracted to a club that United can sign if problems in the engine room persist for Amorim.
Josh Brownhill
Arguably the best option available is former Burnley captain Josh Brownhill. The 29-year-old has seemingly made a number of surprising decisions, which has included turning down the chance to become the highest-paid player at Turf Moor, along with approaches from Wolves and Leicester City.
As things stand, he's available and could be the perfect addition in midfield for United especially as he has Premier League experience. He even came through their famed academy system!
Josh Dasilva
Former Brentford man Josh Dasilva is another man that fits into that category having played 48 times in England's top-flight. At 26, he has plenty of years left in the game despite missing a year-and-a-half with a knee injury which required surgery.

Despite his contract at Gtech Community Stadium having expired this past summer, he continued recovering from the major injury at the club's training ground. It is unclear exactly how much longer he will need, but it is somewhat of a risk-free move for United to add another body in midfield for this season.
Christian Eriksen
This would be quite a deal for United to do, but absolutely nothing can be ruled out!
Christian Eriksen left the club a few months ago when his contract expired.
A return is highly unlikely but he would need minimal time to settle back in and it would provide Amorim with a needed body in the centre of the pitch. The ex-Tottenham man - now 33 - made 100-plus appearances for United over two seasons at the club.
