Alexander Isak has officially left Newcastle United and joined Liverpool for a British record £130m.
Newcastle had no intention of selling Isak at the beginning of the summer, but the player went through drastic measures to ensure he got his wish.
Isak sat out of the Magpies’ pre-season tour of Asia and went on strike, refusing to train or play with his teammates despite countless efforts to reintegrate him.
During that period, Isak also released a statement and in it wrote “when promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can’t continue”. Newcastle hit back, refuting suggestions Isak had been told he could leave and again played down the prospect of a sale.
But persistence has paid off as far as Isak is concerned. Newcastle accepted a £130million offer from Liverpool in the early hours of deadline day and he travelled to Merseyside to undergo his medical and put pen to paper on a six-year contract.
Newcastle confirmed Isak’s departure in a blunt 37-word statement, which included no mention of his goals or achievements, and no thank you.
Alexander Isak’s first words since leaving Newcastle United for Liverpool
Isak has tarnished his legacy and relationships at St James’ Park, but not that he seems to mind, having sat down to discuss his move to Anfield.
“It’s a mixture of what the club is building, but what they’re building on top of what the club already is. The history of the club,” Isak told Liverpoolfc.com. “Me getting the chance to be a part of this, I want to create history. I want to win trophies.
“That’s ultimately the biggest motivation for me and I feel like this is the perfect place for me to grow even further and to take my game to the next level and help the team as well.
“I feel like this is the next step for me in my career. I’m super-happy that I’ve been given this chance and I’m very motivated to do something well with it.

“I think I have a lot to give, I think I have a lot to improve. I’m a striker but I always want to give as much as possible to the team, mainly goals but much more than that as well. I want to win everything. Yeah, [as simple as that].”
“It’s so exciting, I think it’s something difficult to put into words, I think you have to experience it and then explain.
“I think we all know what Liverpool is about, the fans and what they’re about as well. So, yeah, looking forward to getting to experience that.”
Isak was then asked to deliver a message to the Liverpool fans, to which he replied: “Just that I am so happy that I’m finally here. I can’t wait to get back out there and hopefully we can share some amazing moments together.”
Newcastle United’s blunt Alexander Isak’s statement
Newcastle’s statement read: “Newcastle United can announce the sale of striker Alexander Isak to Liverpool for a significant British record transfer fee.
“The Sweden international joined the Magpies from Real Sociedad in 2022 and made 109 appearances in all competitions.”
