Sunderland sporting director Kristjaan Speakman has been discussing the club’s relationship with Chelsea following their decision to recall Marc Guiu.
Sunderland signed Guiu from Chelsea on an initial season-long loan at the beginning of August.
However, after an injury to Liam Delap, Chelsea decided to recall their young striker. There was no break clause in Guiu’s deal, meaning that Sunderland had to agree to the 19-year-old returning to Stamford Bridge.
While he was not there for long, Guiu was able to score one goal for Regis Le Bris’ side, which came against Huddersfield Town in the second round of the Carabao Cup.

Sunderland sporting director Kristjaan Speakman opens up on relationship with Chelsea after Marc Guiu recall
Guiu was a bit of a coup for Sunderland. He was Chelsea’s top scorer in the Conference League last season, and Speakman explained that Chelsea needed to be convinced before they decided to send their rising star to the North East.
The Black Cats would have been disappointed to have seen Guiu return to west London so quickly, but it does not seem to have damaged their relationship with the Club World Cup winners.
On Chelsea’s decision to recall Guiu, Speakman told Sunderland’s official club website: “This has been an unusual situation to navigate, and our priority must always be to act in the best interests of Sunderland AFC.

“Following discussions with Chelsea, Marc, and his representatives throughout the last 48 hours, we believe we have achieved this outcome and that this decision is in the best interests of all parties. We wish Marc well upon returning to Chelsea, who we continue to enjoy a strong relationship with, and we now move forward.”
Guiu scored six goals in seven appearances en route to Enzo Maresca‘s side lifting the Conference League trophy in Wroclaw.
Maresca will now be hoping that Guiu can translate that goalscoring form over to the Premier League when he is called upon.
It has been reported that Guiu has handled his return to Chelsea “professionally”, and he will now be looking to kick on in a blue shirt once the international break is over.
