Donnarumma joins Man City as Ederson set for Fenerbahce

Gianluigi Donnarumma has joined Manchester City after Ederson departed the Premier League club for Fenerbahce on the final day of the summer transfer window.

Donnarumma, 26, had one year left on his contract at Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain and was looking for an exit after Lucas Chevalier joined from Lille last month.

The Italy international joins Pep Guardiola’s side for £30.3million (€35million) after initial interest was shown from rivals Manchester United.

City bolstered their goalkeeping options earlier in the window when they announced that James Trafford would return in a deal worth around £27million. But the deal itself cut City’s losses to £13million after Trafford moved to Burnley in 2023 for £14million from the Etihad Stadium.

It comes at a time where City have lost back-to-back Premier League matches — against Tottenham Hotspur and then Brighton & Hove Albion — for the first time since December last year.

The addition of Donnarumma, who has 74 caps for Italy and led them to European glory against England in 2020, is expected to liven Guardiola’s squad up as the Catalan nears a decade at the club.

Ederson, who has posed as City’s No1 for eight years, has departed Manchester for Fenerbahce despite Galatasaray having earlier interest in the Brazilian.

The 32-year-old will move to Turkey on a £12.1million (€14million) deal having won six Premier League titles, a Champions League and FA Cup with the eight-time English top-flight champions.

With the inclusion of Marcus Bettinelli and Stefan Ortega, it means that City remain with four senior goalkeepers, though sources confirmed on Monday that Ortega desires a move elsewhere.

Analysis: What will Donnarumma bring to Man City?

Donnarumma’s move has pricked the ears of many City fans who are intrigued to see how he will perform in the Premier League, and it’s likely he will mirror the success acquired at PSG for Guardiola’s side.

When it comes to shot-stopping, there aren’t many better in world football at the moment and at only 26 years of age, Donnarumma has plenty of experience but equally as much potential to fill in the years to come.

Other strengths that are persistent in the Italian’s game are his one-on-one and penalty saving – while one of his weaknesses, of the few that exist, is his ability and instinct when distributing the ball.

That’s essentially what makes Donnarumma and Ederson very different, which could become a challenge for Guardiola.

The move will weigh heavily on whether Donnarumma can adapt to the pace and intensity of the English top-flight, while improving his ball distribution and maintaining his talent when it comes to making match-winning saves.
