Preston manager Heckingbottom said: “Harrison is a special talent who we’re really excited to be bringing on board.

“There were a number of clubs after him and he’s been doing so well that we weren’t sure if Everton would keep him around for the Premier League season.

“It’s great for us that they’ve decided this is the best place for him to be right now. He’s got real quality and I’m looking forward to working with him.”

Armstrong is currently away on international duty with England under-19s and is highly thought of at Everton where he featured prominently in their pre-season campaign.

Last week he produced two assists and won the man of the match award in a 2-0 win over Mansfield in the Carabao Cup.

He became a firm favourite during his time at Derby where he scored a terrific goal in a 3-2 win at Plymouth as the club successfully avoided relegation from the Championship.

Everton boss Daivd Moyes has high hopes for the 18-year-old who signed his first professional contract with the club in July last year.
