Whitwell: One United star requested a new and improved contract after Uel final, it ‘didn’t go…

Andre Onana faces an uncertain future at Manchester United after falling down the pecking order of Ruben Amorim’s goalkeepers.

While not cast aside from the first-team in the same way the ‘bomb squad’ were, it was thought throughout the summer that the Cameroonian could be offloaded for the right price, which would open the door for United to sign his replacement.

Yet, both Onana and Bayindir’s substandard showings since the term got underway prompted the board to act on the market irrespective of whether either would be sold.

United stepped up their efforts to sign a shot-stopper on Sunday by agreeing personal terms with Emiliano Martinez. However, they were simultaneously negotiating the arrival of a younger option in the form of Senne Lammens, and eventually opted for the latter due to his age (23).

It was confirmed on deadline day that the club had finalised an £18.2 million deal to sign Lammens from Royal Antwerp on a five-year deal – all but cementing that Onana’s future would no longer be as Amorim’s first-choice between the sticks.

What Onana did immediately after UEL defeat left Amorim baffled

Remarkably, Laurie Whitwell has revealed this morning that in the aftermath of United’s Europa League final defeat in May, Onana returned to Carrington with expectations he’d be granted a new contract.

The team’s defeat in the clash set in stone that they wouldn’t be playing Champions League football this season, meaning players would receive a 25 per cent salary cut. Such a stance from the struggling ‘keeper ‘did not go down well with Amorim’.

AS Monaco established their interest in signing Onana, but ultimately opted against submitting a formal bid after learning of his £30m price tag.
