Newcastle stars break ranks on Alexander Isak after bitter parting of ways

Wantaway Isak became the story of the summer transfer window after he unceremoniously declared that his 'relationship' with Newcastle had ended as he pushed to join Premier League champions Liverpool.

He finally got his move after the club decided to soften their stance on his price tag, accepting a British record fee of £130m for the Swedish international striker - Isak had been on strike himself in the interim, failing to play a single minute of pre-season for Eddie Howe's side.

The move to Liverpool was confirmed by Newcastle, who issued a blunt 37-word statement which did not thank Isak for his time at the club, such was the souring of the relationship between the two parties.

But, senior players have now broken ranks with the club, posting public messages of thanks to Isak on social media.

First was Dutch defender Sven Botman, who took to Instagram to make his statement, saying: "What started off as teammates grew into one of my rare best friendships.

This message, accompanied with a heart emoji, was followed up by a similar story from winger Anthony Gordon - who was subject to interest himself from Liverpool last season.

"Regardless of the situation and what's gone on," Gordon said, "It's been a pleasure to play with you."

"One of the best chemistries I've had on the pitch and more importantly a great person and teammate. I wish you nothing but the best brother."

These kind words were harder to find among Newcastle supporters, with fan group 'Wor Flags' - who organised large stadium-wide displays supporting Isak during his time at the club - taking to X to say "good riddance" to the departing forward.

"You were idolised and adored by every generation of our brilliant fan base, legendary status," Wor Flags said.
