The summer transfer window has closed, and Manchester United have come out of it with significant changes to their squad to address last season's shortfalls - but fans in the Manchester Evening News comments section say that they would have liked to see at least one more addition to truly complete the window.
The club's priority going into the window was to address an attacking department that scored fewer Premier League goals than the likes of Wolves, West Ham and Crystal Palace last season.
To that end, United bet big on the trio of Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha to form the bulk of the summer spending. There was also investment in the future of the club, with young Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens, Paraguay's Diego Leon, and French forward Ezno Kana-Biyik joining.
Raising the funds for that work meant significant departures, with Alejandro Garnacho and Antony securing permanent moves away. Marcus Rashford will spend another spell away on loan, this time at Barcelona, and Rasmus Hojlund and Jadon Sancho have also been shipped out on temporary deals.
Some fans wish they could have gone a bit further with the changes this summer. Reader Manneu says: "Not a bad window but I want to see the new goalie in action before giving a final verdict. Midfield is definitely a problem area, as is Amorim's extremely nervous behavior at the sideline. Does he really believe in his project?"
Commenter John198 writes: "I’d rate it a 5 for outgoing players. A 4 on incomings - no midfielder and no cover in attacking positions. We’re literally going to have a bench full of defenders, our owners have shown a complete lack of ambition in my opinion."
Fanaticmanufan says: "A fairly good transfer window, which got the wantaways out of the way thankfully. It was a very good move to get a good young keeper who next season will compete with young Vitek. Sadly we didn’t get a much needed defensive midfielder, but hopefully Martinez can surprise us when he returns from injury. At least there wasn’t a panic buy!
"In the meantime I’m sure a new defensive midfielder will be targeted for the next transfer window, and we will also find buyers for Onana, Bayindir, Dalot, and Ugarte! Let’s hope in the meantime Amorim has some sense to be flexible with his formations and also make sure that he uses youngsters."
Chickenoriental writes: "A fairly disappointing window for me. Keeper, WB and DM should have been the priority. But too much was spent on two new No.10s, of which Bruno and Amad were more than capable of. Stuck with Dorgu at LWB, especially if/when Shaw gets injured.
"And I hope I'm wrong, but Amad will not succeed at RWB. These are the most important positions for this system. And this new keeper, I know little of him so I hope United did proper scouting this time. Asides from Garnacho's departing, the outgoings have been as good as you would expect."
D2501 says: "Have to say I’m surprised we STILL haven’t signed a DM. Every football fan and his dog can see we need one but our owners and manager are the outliers. I hope we rectify this in January. Loan someone if necessary.
"I do think we’ve made an error with the keeper too. We needed experience in there, not youth at this point, but time will tell. 3/5 stars for the window."
Glazerclowns adds: "Amorim and INEOS have no more excuses, now that the deadwood has been cleared out and new players brought in. The days of wasting money on sub-par players has to end."
