Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton has withdrawn from the England squad ahead of this week’s World Cup qualifiers.
Wharton pulled up with a groin injury in the 55th minute of Sunday evening's 3-0 win at Villa Park, after blocking a long-range effort from Youri Tielemans.
The 21-year-old was called up for international duty last Friday for the first time since Thomas Tuchel took charge, but will now remain at Palace to begin his recovery after undergoing scans on Monday.
His withdrawal follows new signing Yeremy Pino pulling out of the Spain squad with ankle pain, while Ismaila Sarr did not report for Senegal duty due to a hamstring injury.
Wharton earned his first England cap under Gareth Southgate last June and was later part of the squad that reached the European Championship final.
He has since struggled on and off with a groin problem and underwent surgery last November to address the issue, which sidelined him for a longer-than-expected three months.
Former Eagle Ruben Loftus-Cheek has been drafted in to replace Wharton. The AC Milan midfielder, who spent the 2017/18 season on loan at Palace from Chelsea, returns to the national setup.
The 29-year-old has 10 England caps to his name and could make his first appearance in seven years under his former Chelsea boss Tuchel.
Palace still have Dean Henderson and Marc Guehi in the England camp, with the pair hoping to feature in the upcoming qualifiers against Andorra and Serbia.
