Newcastle fans appeared to be ready to forgive former striker Alexander Isak after he issued a farewell statement following his British record transfer to Liverpool.
Isak had refused to train for Newcastle in a bid to force a move to Liverpool, which was finally agreed on deadline day. Liverpool announced his £125m signing late on Monday night, with Newcastle issuing a cold 37-word statement confirming his departure.
The Swedish striker said he moved to Liverpool to ‘win everything’, and on Tuesday he posted a goodbye message in a bid to smooth relations with his old club and their furious fans.
“He wrote: “I want to express my gratitude to my teammates, the staff, and above all, the city of Newcastle and all the amazing supporters for the three unforgettable years we shared together.
“Together, we have written history and brought the club to the place where it truly belongs. It has been an honour to be part of the journey from reaching the Champions League to winning the first trophy in over 70 years. Forever grateful. Thank you, Newcastle.”
Newcastle send positive messages to Alexander Isak despite angry response to his exit
Surprisingly, comments from Newcastle fans were relatively mellow. Instagram user @anthonyjackson5636 wrote: “I’m absolutely gutted you’ve left us and the way you’ve done it but you will always have my respect for what you’ve done for my club.
“Time heals anything, you [will] be welcome back some day once your career is over. But all best on your next chapter.”

@kimerthy1 said: “Thank you for this, whatever happened behind the scenes, the fans and your teammates deserved better from you. But regardless of all that, thank you for the 3 years and the memories.”

“One of the best chemistries I’ve had on the pitch and more importantly a great person and teammate. I wish you nothing but the best brother.”
TBR Football reported on Monday that some Newcastle players were relieved that Isak left St James’ Park after a turbulent summer.
There were plenty of abusive messages on Isak’s post from Newcastle fans, while Liverpool fans were keen to welcome the striker to Anfield.
