Report: 'World-class' Man City player evaluating potential move to seven-time Turkish champions

One of Manchester City’s “world-class” players is wanted by seven-time Turkish league champions Trabzonspor.

Although the English transfer window has slammed shut, there are numerous countries that can still sign players over the next few days or weeks.

For instance, the transfer window in Turkiye remains open until September 12, so Manchester City could still sell players to their clubs.

And Trabzonspor, who finished seventh in the Super Lig last season, are looking at one of City’s players to strengthen their ranks.

Trabzonspor are now exploring a deal to sign Ortega, according to Sky Sport Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg.

Ortega is currently evaluating this option, but no offer has been made yet, added the reporter.

The likes of Burnley and Leicester City were linked with Ortega over the summer.

Why Trabzonspor move would be great for both Stefan Ortega and Pep Guardiola

Ortega is a wonderful goalkeeper who Pep Guardiola deemed “world-class” and “exceptional” after his efforts against Tottenham Hotspur in May 2024.

However, with City now having Gianluigi Donnarumma, James Trafford and Marcus Bettinelli on their books, Ortega will need to move if he wants any game time.

Trabzonspor would be a good club for Ortega to join as they are usually up and around the title and European places, so there’s scope to win silverware.

Indeed, they have won seven Turkish league titles, the latest of which came in 2021/22, and were Turkish Cup runners-up over the past two seasons.

However, they had a poor campaign last year, which means Ortega could make a real name for himself if he gets them back to the top levels.

Meanwhile, Guardiola and Man City would benefit because Trabzonspor are not in Europe this season, so there’s no chance the two teams will come together this term.

Man City are already set to go up against Kevin De Bruyne and Claudio Echeverri in the Champions League this season.
