“Maybe Potter knows what he’s doing” | Report describes perfectly the mad world of West Ham

So much happened in a short space of time this weekend just gone: The whole [Lucas Paquetá](https://www.claretandhugh.info/aston-villas-bid-for-lucas-paqueta-west-ham-transfer-update/) _could be, would be, won’t be sold_ media frenzy inflating and exploding as the Nottingham Forest trip took centre stage: The Hammers welcomed not one, but two new signings on Friday – one of whom had a super debut at the City ground.

And if that wasn’t enough, the deadline day links with everyone from Cresswell to Oosterwolde,  Harwood-Bellis to Disasi  kept everyone guessing – and wishing – until finally a loan deal was announced for Igor Julio.

Prophetically, the [nytimes.com/athletic](https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6587175/2025/09/01/west-ham-mad-world-nothing-makes-sense/) produced a fabulous article that encapsulated it all in their weekend piece titled:

**_” Welcome to the mad world of West Ham, where nothing makes sense anymore”._**

Author Tim Spiers Summed up the whole Lucas Paquetá rollercoaster episode perfectly:

_“Twenty-four hours after his days looked numbered, Paqueta couldn’t have been more West Ham if he’d blown a load of bubbles into the away end and revealed a Trevor Brooking tattoo on his back.”._ Clearly West Ham’s magnifico is on-course for legend status to rival the likes of Paulo Di Canio and aforementioned Sir Trev.

And on the myth-busting of suggestions of West Ham’s impending demise, Callum Wilson’s unpopularity, Paqueta’s stage-managed exit theories and Potter’s ineptitude, Spiers concluded that there _might just be more_ to West Ham’s season than supporters dared to hope for:

_“Maybe Summerville adds a hitherto unseen dynamic dimension to West Ham’s play, maybe Wilson is a striker reborn, maybe Paqueta loves the club, maybe Potter knows what he’s doing._ _It was a day for truths. And West Ham might have a decent football team. Who knew?”_

Overall the whole three days sums up exactly what it means to be a West Ham fan in 2025: Despair, hope, further despair, a totally unexpected moment of elation and equal helpings of hope and despair again.  A mad world indeed.
