Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin has been ruled out of Ukraine’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers after picking up a lower back problem. The injury was sustained during the warm-up ahead of Los Blancos’ clash with Mallorca at the Santiago Bernabéu last weekend.
Despite the setback, Lunin traveled to Ukraine to be assessed by the national team’s medical staff. Following their evaluation, he was released from international duty and will now miss the September 5th meeting with France and the September 9th game against Azerbaijan in the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.
His return to Madrid adds another player to a big list of players who didn’t go on international duty. Even with 12 players away on international duty.
Several notable absentees from international football are still in the Spanish capital. Jude Bellingham (injured) and Trent Alexander-Arnold, both regulars for England, remain in Madrid, as do Eduardo Camavinga (recovering from injury) and the entire Brazilian contingent.
