European Round-up: Lille and PSG goal-happy; Liverpool win clash of big spenders; Leverkusen…

JÜRGEN Klopp was present as Paris FC won their first points in Ligue 1 in their opening home fixture. The newly-promoted side won 3-2 against hapless Metz despite going a goal down. Algerian midfielder Ilan Kebbal scored twice for Paris and the winner came from Moses Simon in the 67th minute. Metz were reduced to 10-men when goalscorer Sadibou Sané was red-carded 10 minutes from time. Champions Paris Saint-Germain were involved in a nine-goal thriller with Toulouse, running out 6-3 winners. Twenty-year-old João Neves netted a spectacular hat-trick, including two brilliant overhead kicks. Ousmane Dembélé also scored twice, both penalties. PSG said farewell to goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who has joined Manchester City this week. Lille went one better in the goalscoring stakes in a 7-1 win at Lorient.  The game, quite remarkably, was goalless at half-time and with 10 minutes remaining it was 3-1 to Lille. Lorient collapsed in the final minutes, conceding two in added time. Lille’s Matias Fernández-Pardo and Hamza Igamane scored two apiece.

**Premier League: City lose again**

MANCHESTER CITY are still not firing on all cylinders and were beaten for the second time in three games. They led at Brighton thanks to Erling Haaland’s 34th minute goal, but a penalty from City’s former player, 39-year-old James Milner and a last-gasp strike from German midfielder Brajan Gruda gave the home side their first victory of the season. City’s defensive problems emerged once more, but there was good news in the form of Rodri’s return to action. The big clash of the weekend was Liverpool’s 1-0 victory against Arsenal, but the game failed to live up to expectations. Liverpool’s decisive goal came in the 83rd minute from a Dominik Szoboszlai’s free kick. Arsenal gave new signing Eberechi Eze his first taste of action, a 20-minute spell as substitute for Gabriel Martinelli. Chelsea continued their good start to the season with a 2-0 win against Fulham but lost Liam Delap early on with a hamstring injury. Fulham had a goal ruled-out by VAR, much to their disgust. Tottenham lost their unbeaten record, 1-0 at home to Bournemouth, while West Ham picked up their first points with a 3-0 victory at Forest. Jack Grealish created two more goals for Everton as they won 3-2 at struggling Wolves. Palace also won away, 3-0 at Aston Villa, who have yet to score a goal. There was relief for Manchester United as they beat Burnley 3-2 with a late penalty from Bruno Fernandes.

**Portugal: First big clash goes Porto’s way**

CHAMPIONS for the past two seasons, Sporting, were beaten for the first time in the league since December 2024 when they were beaten 2-1 at home by Porto. The defeat was coach Rui Borges’ first in the Primeira Liga with the club, a run of 24 games. In front of almost 51,000 people, Porto went two goals up thanks to Luuk de Jong and William Gomes, who scored with a spectacular 25-yard shot. Sporting’s reply was an own goal by Nethvén Pérez late in the game. Benfica, meanwhile, were fortunate to beat a spirited young Alveria side 2-1 with goals from Andreas Schelerup and Amar Dedić.

**Bundesliga: Ten Hag sacked**

BAYER Leverkusen disposed of Erik ten Hag as coach after just two Bundesliga games, an unprecedented situation in the German top flight. Ten Hag’s team earned just one point from two games, but in both they could have come away with maximum points. The latest setback, a 3-3 draw at Werder Bremen, saw Leverkusen throw away a 3-1 lead in the closing stages. Leverkusen’s decision is bizarre in some ways, because they have scarcely given Ten Hag a chance to settle and seemed rather unconvinced about the appointment in the first place. The first Hamburg derby in the Bundesliga in 14 years ended with St. Pauli winning 2-0 at the Volksparkstadion. Hamburg are still looking for their first goal this season. Bayern Munich went into a three-goal lead in Augsburg, but the home team pulled back two goals to keep the champions on their toes. Serhou Guirassy scored twice as Dortmund beat Union Berlin 3-0, while Köln maintained their 100% record by beating Freiburg 4-1. Frankfurt have also won both of their games, beating Hoffenheim 3-1 away with two goals from Ritsu Dōan.

**Serie A: Udinese silence San Siro**

THE INTER Milan directors have apparently kept faith in new coach Christian Chivu, despite his side’s 2-1 defeat in the San Siro against Udinese. Inter went ahead through Denzel Dumfries, but goals from Keinan Davis and Arthur Atta silenced the 71,000 crowd. Champions Napoli scraped home against Cagliari with a last minute goal from Frank Anguissa, while Juventus won by a single goal in Genoa, thanks to Dušan Vlahović’s second of the season. Roma did likewise at Pisa. Newly-promoted Cremonese, who have signed 38-year-old Jamie Vardy from Leicester, kept up their good start beating Sassuolo 3-2. Milan won 2-0 at Lecce with former Chelsea players Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Christian Pulisic scoring the goals.

**Scotland: Damp squib at Ibrox**

THE Glasgow derby at Ibrox promised much but ended in a 0-0 draw, leaving a 50,000 crowd disappointed and frustrated. Rangers are still looking for their first victory and thought they were on their way when John Souttar headed into the Celtic net, only for his effort to be ruled-out by VAR. The game was littered with errors and had very few opportunities to score. The other Scottish derby saw Dundee lose 2-0 at home to Dundee United, leaving the home side without a win. United’s goals came from Zap Sapsford and Ivan Dolček, giving them their first win of the campaign.

**And elsewhere …**

* PSV Eindhoven were surprisingly beaten 2-0 at home by Telstar, while Feyenoord were 4-0 winners at Sparta Rotterdam

* Union Saint-Gilloise won their Brussels derby 2-0 against Anderlecht

* Sturm Graz won their local derby at the Merkur Arena against Grazer AK by 3-0.
