Paul Scholes shares honest thoughts on Ruben Amorim as Man Utd pressure mounts

Paul Scholes has criticised Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim for being excessively honest. The United manager delivered a heartfelt and frank interview following his team's stunning Carabao Cup elimination at the hands of League Two side Grimsby last week.

Amorim declared his players "spoke really loudly about what they want" through their dreadful performance, which United legend Scholes branded a blunder to voice publicly. "I quite like Amorim," said Scholes. "He's very honest and can be too honest. He's saying what every manager probably thinks at some point, but I don't think you say that out loud. There are so many experienced managers in the Premier League who will be thinking that, and I've thought that, but they won't say it.

"The worst comment for me was after the Grimsby game, where he said that the players spoke out loud – I thought that was a little bit damning for him." When questioned about what he believed Amorim intended, Scholes replied: "That the players don't want to play for him."

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher commented: "The problem with Amorim is that he's great in the press conferences but because he's not winning, people are thinking, 'Oh, shut up. Stop speaking.' But if he was winning, we'd all be thinking he's a great character and personality.

"If he wasn't so charismatic in the press conference, and wasn't such a good-looking man, he might have lost his job a lot earlier. When you look at the results, they are horrendous."

Scholes also criticised United's transfer strategy, stating that the club had failed to bolster their midfield - an area he deemed crucial.

"We talk about recruitment and United haven't addressed the areas which needed addressing," Scholes declared. "They needed to address the midfield – the legs were never in there.

"Amorim has got four or five midfield players, and he wants to play two of them, but he can't get it right, he can't get the combination right."
