Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton is expected to be sidelined for around three weeks after he tweaked his adductor in his right leg, the News Shopper understands.
The 21-year-old was forced off in the 55th minute of Palace’s 3-0 win over Aston Villa on Sunday and subsequently withdrew from the England squad earlier today.
The setback comes as a blow for Wharton, who had earned his first call-up under Thomas Tuchel and was hoping to catch the eye ahead of next summer's World Cup.
Tuchel has been a regular visitor to Selhurst Park, monitoring Wharton, who has started all six of Palace's games this term.
Scans on Monday indicated that Wharton may return as early as 20 September, when Palace visit West Ham at the London Stadium.
Wharton did not report to the England camp and instead remained at Palace to undergo tests and begin his recovery. Former Eagle Ruben Loftus-Cheek was drafted in to replace him.
Despite Wharton's withdrawal, Palace still have interest in England's World Cup qualifiers, with captain Marc Guehi and Community Shield hero Dean Henderson both in the squad.
Wharton joins Cheick Doucoure on the list of midfield abstentees for the Eagles. Daichi Kamada, Justin Devenny and Jefferson Lerma are on international duty and Palace will be hoping they return unscathed.
